I was asked to pass this information on to the list and hopefully listers will pass it on to anyone who they know were at the Canfield, Ohio shows this weekend. Please pass on the information to anyone who had dogs at that show.
A 7 month old beagle puppy died this weekend at the Canfield shows. Another puppy is critically ill and not expected to survive. The 7 month old beagle puppy belonged to my friend and handler, ***** **** so I know firsthand this is not just a story going around. ***** is so upset. The second puppy belongs to a friend of hers. Veterinarians treating them are baffled and do not know if the cause is a fast acting bacterial virus or a poisoning. *****'s puppy began not wanting to eat on Thursday evening, and right away ***** knew something was wrong.
She ran him to the show vet on Friday morning. He was still not interested in food and he had soft stools, not quite diarrhea. Otherwise, he appeared normal and had normal temperature. They kept him, did blood work, put him on antibiotics thinking he had gastroenteritis and wanted to keep him overnight as a precaution as his symptoms were progressing. They ran a second set of blood work on him late Friday. By Saturday he was in acute kidney failure and died Saturday afternoon.
The second dog belonging to another handler began having similar symptoms and was told of *****'s puppy. She initially shook it off as a coincidence, but was convinced to take hers in to the vet as well. They were not in close proximity to each other at the show. That puppy has same symptoms, it's creatine and bun are off the charts and as of this afternoon its chances for survival are not good. Another dog of *****'s is experiencing symptoms and her blood work shows some abnormalities but she is hospitalized and being monitored very closely.
***** left the show site on Saturday evening and went to North Carolina where she is staying with show friends and the vets there are working with the vets in Ohio to try to figure out what has caused this. They did take soil samples fearing that perhaps the grounds had been treated with insecticides that the dogs came in contact with since the symptoms resemble a poisoning of some kind.
Will update if I hear anything else. Our dog is fine, thank god.
The beagle puppy was vaccinated for, but died due to lepto. The vaccine covers just a small fraction of the more than 40 strains of lepto. Further tests are being done to identify the strain that affected the puppy.
I had an opportunity to meet this puppy at our national specialty. He was a sweet little guy and his owner is devastated.
