How often does everyone brush their dog's teeth? Do you have a favorite product/way? Any tips? Right now, I'm brushing my 9 month old's teeth about once a week. I use doggie toothpaste and one of those brushes you stick on the end of your finger. And then we struggle - I'm not sure I'm getting all of the teeth brushed properly. I also have an almost 4 month old - he will be loosing his teeth soon, should I be brushing his teeth right now, or should I wait until his adult teeth come in?
to be honest i only brush my dogs teeth when i think about it. i really should be more diligent about it especially since my dog loves the taste of the doggie toothpaste and doesn't mind getting her teeth brushed at all. i would however suggest to do it at least once a week. if your dog is a small breed i would do it more often as they are highly prone to dental disease. i would suggest doing the 4 months old teeth now. even though it doesn't matter much because he is going to lose those teeth it will get him used to the idea. also brushing the teeth is as much for gum health as it is for reducing tartar buildup. excuse me while i go brush scouts teeth !!!
I brush their pup teeth as well as their adult teeth, that way they get used to having their teeth brushed, I used my finger and petrodex toothpaste at the pup stage and then a dog toothbrush and the toothpaste Dont make it a chore for the dog, and give plenty of spaces so they can stop lick their lips and breathe (might sound obvious) in between when you are brushing rather than trying to do their whole mouth in one go straightaway
starsmum, imho anything you do to brush his teeth is an improvement over nothing. Don't sweat it if you don't get all his teeth. Hopefully the dry kibble he eats or chew toys/treats are enough to keep those clean.
stars, i do it once per week and i use the finger things, too. it's easier for me than the toothbrush. i don't worry about getting the inside surface of the teeth, i only do the outside surface, and that makes it a lot easier. and if i only hit the gums, well that's good too, to stimulate to gums. i started by giving a treat then brushing some then another treat (small), and it helped with the struggling. they actually don't mind it a bit now and love the toothpaste.
