hi, i'm wondering what you all think would be a good pet for an active family. My family loves to go hiking and swimming, but we like to hang out n chill too. So like a mellow dog would be perfect i think. Please can ya help me?
i wouldn't do anything else. I'm just asking for a breed. I would never buy a puppy from a breeder or petshop unless one of my kids wanted to start showing or something of the sort, and then i would do research on the breeder and the like before buying a puppy from them.
I guess i should have asked if someone could suggest a good breed. srry bout the mix up.
everyone is probably going to have their own opinion on what breed is the best "family dog" and my opinion is DEFINATLY a lab. we have had 2 labs since we have had children and they have been absolutly AWESOME!!!! I have an 8, 6 and 1 1/2 year old and those kids can do anything to that dog and it just takes it. We also are very active do alot of walking in the woods, fishing, hunting etc and Hunter goes right along with us. When we are swimming he acts as a life guard somewhat and never strays too far from the kids and barks if he thinks they get too far out. I will always have a lab for as long as i have children at home!!!
if you do decide on a purebred watch where you get it from, go to a really good breeder that focuses on good temperments and health, just because it is one of the family breeds doesn't mean it will be, I have been bitten by 3 labs, breeding makes a difference
Bitten by three labs!? Wow. I'm lucky no bites. I really like boxers. They are quite energetic and provide hilarious entertainment. Although they are prone to health problems, I would suggest finding a good breeder.
My name says it all...Collies only want to be with their "pack"..We used too have foster children and they were coming in and out all the time...The dogs always became their best friends and I always knew the pups were with the kids watching them. They seemed to know the difference between the babies and howq to interact with them and the older ones that wanted a catcher while playing ball or just someone to run around with. They would herd the kids into the house when called. Good luck on finding the right dog and I do agree...look for a recue group or go to petfinder
I think that poodles make great family dogs. They are highly intelligent, great with kids and have tons of energy. We had a toy poodle when I was a kid and she went everywhere we did. I couldn't say anything bad about her. She was an awesome dog!
I am partial to the English Setter! They are wonderful with kids, active outside and usually mellow inside. They don't reach full maturity until about 2, so keep in mind that they will be more active than a lot of dogs will be at that age. They can be stubborn, but I hear the males are easier to train than females. (I have a female) They are just big, dopey love bugs! I have never seen a dog that loves to be touched more than her!
Like the posts before.... Find a reputable breeder and do your research! However, if you want to rescue an English, I recommend ACES. Another Chance English Setters.
Thank you all for your great suggestions. As for breeders, i would NOT go to one unless the kids were interested in doing shows with pure breeds. and i and the kids would do alot of research on the breeder. I think english setters and collies would be good...though I am going to continue to look around. thanks again everyone.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a wonderful family dog! They are calm and welcoming and enjoy family interaction. Being a spaniel - they also enjoy outdoor activities. We have 3 and we enjoy taking them on family outings and camping. Their smaller size makes them well suited for travel.
I would also like to add that they are smart and easily trained.
Wish you and your family the best of luck!!
