Can't help ya with the pee smell, but how about putting an automatic door closer on the door to your daughters' room? That way, they (or anybody else) won't have to remember to close the door, it'll close by itself! They're fairly inexpensive and easy to install (so says my DH anyways).
gbroxon, and ntki, THANK YOU!!!! Those are Excellent ideas!! I will get a auto door closer tomorrow!! I never even thought of that!!!
Whoever it was that said I wanted a labradoodle, wrong! I actually really dislike the lab temperment and don't care for the looks of the labradoodle. I do like the looks and temperment of some of the "designer dogs" but I already have a dog and do not want any more.
Also my cats, all of them are fixed. The last thing I need is a litter of kittens. Also, my house is VERY clean. I cannot stand it to be dirty. Hence, my reason for asking for help on how to get rid of this awful bad habit, and smell!
Not to be a smart a$$ or anything, but whats NOT to like about a labs temperment?? My dad has two and they are awesome dogs. Heres the description of the breeds temperment: disposition is one of a kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non-aggressive towards man or animal. The Labrador has much that appeals to people; his gentle ways, intelligence and adaptability make him an ideal dog.
labs are excellent dogs. generally good natured lovebugs. i dont know why katz would say that she doesnt like the temperment of labs. she has a chow, which is much more tempermental and untrustworthy than a lab.
Funny thing I have had a chow she is still very much alive though, just not with me, she loves people, other dogs not so much. She lives with 2 little boys, ages 2 and 4 and she is wonderful with them as she was with my son when she lived with me.
I ahve however been bitten by 3 black labs, and attacked by a yellow lab. I dont chaulk it all up to breeds I also lump breeding and ownership in their. Labs you can generally tie up to a tree and never touch and it will still have an even temperment, not always but usually. Chows are the exact opposite tie it to a tree it will not be nice. Pippins brother was ran over by his owners because they tied him to a tree and at 4 months old he tried to bite someone.
I am mors afraid of labs than of any other breed, but i think that has alot to do with the fact that almost everyone that owns a lab or golden for that matter, thinks that everyone loves labs and they never hurt anyone. This is the exxact attitude that led to my 4 encounters.
Katz, this is what you can do for the carpet. Buy some vinegar, and mix with a small amount of water. Spray the carpet with the mixture(this neutralizes the PH of urine),use the wet vac to suck it up. Then, apply an enzyme(found at local janitorial supply stores),spray liberally, cover with plastic for at least 24 hours to keep area "soaked",then go back and vac it up with wet vac.
If,for some reason this doesn't solve your problem with smell, you can pull the carpet up,replace it and the pad.....but,when you do this, you do need to use the sealer on the sub-flooring,and can put it on the back of the pad as well when you lay it down. Then, put your new carpet in. The sealer works to keep out all odors and helps you to prevent having to pull up carpet and pad again if they happen to pee on it in the future.
Hope this helps.
P.S. It has already been mentioned that ammonia isn't a good thing to use....never mix more ammonia with urine to try to clean it. Also, mixing bleach with urine is like mixing bleach with ammonia, again,a no-no for sure.
"if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all"
That's like saying no one should speak out against puppy mills-don't want to hurt their feelings. Or no one should stick up for an animal that is being abused-after all, you wouldn't be saying anything nice about the person doing it.
Anyway...Dusty, if you hadn't of said it, I would have! That was the first thought that popped into my mind-there goes another cat, rehomed to "the most wonderful person ever..."
I replied to a post a few weeks back with some tips from a cat behaviorist. Don't feel like putting it all down again, because these cats probably won't be living there much longer anyway. But, ammonia would be the WORST thing to use to clean it up. That would be like encouraging them to pee there.
Ruffian, exactly why I am not fond of labs, they are over bred and everyone thinks they are the perfect dog and at least around here they are extremely hyper, mouthy, and are generally hard to train. I prefer the calmness of my chow, and I like his temperment alot better.
Hey Katz.... Sorry so many people are giving you a hard time...again.
How many cat boxes do you have in the house? That could also be one of the problems...if you have 4 cats..you should have 4 boxes plus at least one more. We had some cats that started peeing in other rooms, even though we cleaned the cat boxes daily. They the vet suggest we get one for each and the peeing stopped.
I hope you find a solution....it is a smelly problem..been there, done that!!!
Hard to train? Ever seen a seeing eye dog? Therapy dogs? Hunting dogs? Epilepsy dogs? Rescue dogs? I would have to disagree that labs are hard to train. And location doesn't make a difference. So I'm not too sure I believe you.
Thanks jbg. I will grab another box at the pet store tomorrow while I am there.
Bogle, Location DOES make a difference. Labs are VERY overbred here. There are people who breed for seeing eye dogs, therapy, etc. However, I would be willing to bet that they are not Labs from just anyone. My brother has a black Lab named Bear and I can't stand him, at 3 years old he is the most obnoxious 70 pound dog, and guess what? He bought him from a "breeder', same as everyone else I know that has a lab. And all of them around here are psycho hyper, they will knock the kids down and most are not the friendliest things on the planet. Sorry, I do not care for labs.
Maybe its the water in the area that makes the dogs so mean, they knock over kids, are extremely hyper, obnoxious, and not friendly in the slightest ways. YOU CANT SERIOUSLY BELIEVE THAT ITS THE LOCATION THAT MAKES THESE LABS THIS WAY. HF!
