CLINTON, Conn. -- Police have arrested a Clinton dog groomer and charged her with killing two dogs.
According to police, Lindsay Deciccio, 22, left two dogs, 2-year-old Trooper and 10-year-old Daisy, inside a stainless-steel dog dryer for too long, killing the dogs. Police said Deciccio admitted to leaving the Yorkshire terriers in the dryer for 25 minutes. The normal drying time for terriers is six minutes.
Police said Deciccio, who runs Total Petcare in Clinton, told them the dryer malfunctioned and blew hot air. Deciccio and her employees had nothing to say when asked by Eyewitness News for comment.
"They were basically baked to death," said the Clinton Police Chief Joseph Faughnan. "It caused severe damage to both of these dogs, killing one at the scene." Police said Deciccio's business was operating without a license. The state attorney general's office has initiated an investigation in the case and charges may be pending.
According to police, Daisy died within minutes. Police said Trooper was covered with second-degree burns. His body temperature was still 110 degrees hours after he was pulled from the dryer.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Katy Zachary reported that several veterinarians said it was the worst case of hyperthermia and dehydration they had ever seen.
That's awful! The poor dogs. If my dog ever dies, I hope he goes quick. I couldn't bear the thought of my little guy suffering.
A few years back, I got my certificate in crime scene investigation for fun. I had to look at tons of bloody, gorry pictures of murder scenes, but none of those bothered me. The one that made me nearly vomit in class was the picture of the 20 month old boy, who's parents had rolled his crib into the tiny little kitchen, opened the oven door and turned it on. They had no heat, so they were trying to keep the baby warm, but instead cooked him to death. That's got to be a horrible way to go.
My three dogs go to the groomer often. I read about this a few weeks ago and immediatly checked out Petsmart (where they are groomed) and discovered they use the dryers that are dangerous. We have switched to a local groomer and I was taken into her grooming room and shown everything she uses. Her drier uses room temparature air, and I can watch her bathe and dry the dogs from out front. I always wondered how my dogs were handled when they were washed and dried. At Petsmart I can only guess. Also, I noticed that the noise from the driers was very loud at Petsmart and I never liked that. I truely liked the girl that groomed my dogs at Petsmart and I feel bad about leaving her, but I worry about my babies.
I read an article lately about this happening. Its mainly because many groomers aren't familiar with all different breeds and what they can handle. Many of the smaller toy breeds can not tolerate heat for too long.
I don't trust groomers. When Mollie was going to Petcetera (i'd like to shut this place down), in daycare she would get stinky, so theyd bathe her. She came home terrified sometimes and I can't clip her nails anymore.
Made me cry, why are some people so careless? Big difference between 6mins. and 25 mins and then they say the dryer malfunctioned, think maybe she malfunctioned ! So sad for the dogs and their owners. I am not one to say sue someone, but I think in this case I would be sueing!
