Hello all. When I first logged on, I told everyone my family and I are looking for a dog and asked for suggestions. Thank you everyone they were very helpful I don't remember who mentioned Petfinder!! but thank you very much Through Petfinder's Adoption site. I found a family looking to adopt out thier 2 year old Cocker Spaniel. He is frienldy, potty trained, crate trained and microchipped. He loves kids and cats. Both were major criteria for me. They are only giving him up cause their other two dogs won't leave him alone. Since we will be a one dog family I feel he could work well for us. We are meething him on Sunday. I am super excited!
Congrats! That's great that you are adopting. I just want to caution you about adopting an adult dog. Some come with baggage. Go with your gut. If something doesn't seem right cut and run. Cockers can be quite nippy a concern especially since you have kids. (I've seen this a lot more with the tan or buff ones)
Take pictures and post them. I know we would love to see them!
A big plus for us was that he is already Potty trained. My hubby is a great guy but not too understanding of puppy puddles. He was raised only with a cat. I have a dog for 18 years so am a littke more forgiving. So I think this could really work for us.
Lol, I thought my hubby was the only "cat man". He never had a dog in his life either, only cats. Whenever Polly had an accident he'd get so angry because he would step in it. He had no clue that you need to look before you step (and I wasn't going to tell him that - hehe).
I think you made a great choice and I'm sure he'll come to find out that dogs are awesome. Especially considering this one is out of the puppy stage :) Please post pictures once you dog arrives. I love Cocker Spaniels, they are beautiful.
My DH too was raised with only cats in their household and he had to get used to the puddle thing, come to think of it he wasn't real happy when we were potty training the kids, he just doesn't like puddles on the floor for some reason ! ;)
I too adopted a cocker spaniel from Petfinder, her name is Abbie. They told me she was 3 or 4 yrs. old, and when my vet saw her and looked at her teeth he said more like 6 or 7. Doesn't matter I love her no matter how old she is.....and she loves me no matter how old I am!!
Oh, well I am glad it worked out for you though. I hope he really is on 2, but I suppose it really shouldn't matter much. As long as he is not sick. I would hate for my son to get attached with the possiblity of him being old. But they seem like pretty trusting people and they only live 30 minutes away from me. So I doubt they would try to pull something over on me. That just my trusting nature though.
When I got Abbie they told me she was abandoned, and they found her in a park, in December (in NJ) sick and matted. I drove from Maine to New Jersey in the middle of a snow storm in February to adopt her because she looked a lot like the cocker I had just lost to diabetes. When I got her she was healthy and happy. Good luck with your new little guy........I am one BIG cocker spaniel lover.
Great story. I am truley trhilled about the possibility of owner one. I have been in love with the breed since I was littke and watched Lady and the Tramp. I really hope he is a perfect match for us. Wow a drive from Maine to NJ... thats not fun. We live in PA and go camping in NJ every weekend.
