I don't know where the Min Pin falls in as being smart, but I had one that was so smart he was almost like a small child. I had to watch him as if he was 2 year old (child). He got into everything. He knew all the tricks I could think of to teach him, examples are sit, lay, rollover, give me five and give me ten, I could point my finger at him like a gun and say gotcha and he would fall over and act dead, He did whats up ( like when you see your friends and tip your head up) He did aye aye sir (raises paw to eye) I would ask him to shake it off and he would shake like he has water on him. When I would tell him What do you do when your girlfriend says she wants a kiss and He would turn his head as if embarissed and walk sidewides until he got to me and I would give him a kiss. I would ask him what do you do when you have fleas and he would scratch himself. He also dug on command. I do believe he was one of a kind because I have another min pin that is dumb as dirt.
I agree some just perceive themselves in a way, so that you don't think they are that intelligent. So in time, they have the upper hand...Lol...Either way, they are great dogs. They definitely own up to the whole "King of Toys" description.
Between Penny and her sisters, you have to spell out words so they don't understand. For instance, if we were considering giving them a long way or short walk, we would have to spell it out. So, then they caught on to that. They don't know if it will be a long or short one, but when they hear "W A L K" They run around like crazy.
But neverthless a great breed. Congrats on yours!!
That is one smart Min Pin and eager to please. Both my Min Pins are smart and learn well. They like to please but are not born with that high desire to please you find in Labs and Golden Retrievers. Sometimes they outsmart you.
I train my dogs by doing commands on what they are doing at the time, Example I taught my cooh bear Tora Tora ( when I first got him, He hated me to hug him so after I would he would kick his back legs ( like when they do after they go to the bathroom) and I would hug him again and when he kick his back legs I would say Tora Tora now he does it on command. My min pin Sly was so smart but if you stared at him, he would tip his head like whats up so when he did it I would say Whats up and he started doing it on command. Also he had bad alergies and would rub his eyes and when he did I would say Aye Aye Sir and you could see the light bulb goe off in his head that he finally got what I wanted him to do and He started doing Aye Aye Sir on command but I will say this Sly was in a whole another league I have had dogs all my life and I have never had one as smart as he was ( I lost him last Monday Aug 21) He died in my arms as he was giving me kisses, Vet said from a blood clot maybe he knew he only had a short time on earth because he learned so quick and I could see in his face when he would understand what I wanted him to do. He was very very special.
