From 8 weeks of age until now (3-1/2 months), my maltipoo, Ellee, has always let me groom her with nothing more than a mild struggle. Every day I brush her coat, brush her teeth, check her ears, toes, etc. All of a sudden starting yesterday, she tries to bite me when I am brushing her fur. I can do everything else, but for some reason, she no longer tolerates being brushed. I've tried giving her treats, toys to bite while I'm brushing her, etc. Yesterday, she growled at me and tried to bite me during brushing. What's going on with her? Why is her usually sweet disposition changing? Does a puppy change its disposition during teething? If so, why does she let me do all the other grooming? I'm totally at a loss. Please help!
I'm using a two-sided brush - one side is bristles and the other side is pins. Nothing noted concerning any type of skin condition, although she does scratch a great deal. I think she has allergies. But all this was going on before she started changing her tolerance about being brushed.
When my corgi was a baby I wanted her to except me cutting her toenails. She did until one day she tried to bite me. She was a few months old. I corrected her for it and proceeded trimming the nails. I saw it as a her trying to learn where the limits were. She never liked getting her nails trimmed but accepted it.
I think you should continue what you are doing so she knows she can not manipulate you. This is after you are certain there is not a medical reason for her outbursts.
