I have a 5 month old cocker named Penny. I usually take her just about everywhere I go or she stays with a sitter. Yesterday my husband and I went to the mall and out to dinner. We were gone about 5 or 6 hours. I wasn't able to get a sitter so we left her home with our Lab. We got home and there was no messes anywhere. I figured everything went well. Last night however was very rough. She has been sleeping with us for about 2 months now. Whenever I turn off the light she will lay down and go to sleep but last night she kept whining and barking. She wouldn't lay down and she was shaking. I finally had to put her in her crate because my hubby had to get up early and he needed sleep. I rushed her to the vet this morning to have her checked out. The vet said she was fine but to keep my eye on her. She said that Penny was probably upset with me for leaving her home. What do ya'll think it could be from? I thought maybe she was coming into heat so I moved her spay day up 2 weeks. What should I do when she is like that?
I tend to agree with the vet in that she was upset at being left alone in the evening when she is usually left with people. She also might have slept the whole time you were gone and was just too amped up and excited to have you home that she couldn't lie down & sleep on the bed. My two mini schnauzer puppies will occasionally freak out and not stay on our bed at night - after they jump off 3 times they go to their crates, this usually happens when we have gone out at night, which isn't often.
hmm... I don't think she was upset at you. She may have been, while you were gone, but dogs don't have that type of brain. I mean, I don't think she was emotionally distraught after you had returned. Now, she MAY have been reacting to how you were feeling upon arriving back to the home. Were you really anxious and nervous to find out if everything was OK? Were you searching around the house for poops or things chewed ?? She may have felt your frantic feelings, she saw you wandering through the house inspecing everything and she didn't know why, and not understood them and so was still in that "mode" of "what's wrong in here?" "why is mom so uneasy and what is she looking for?"
Best to NOT cuddle/coddle/love her when she's acting like that. tell her to knock it off, and ignore her. The more attention you give that behavior, the more she does it.
Now, something else could have been wrong, I am glad you got her checked by the vet. pay attention to that behavior, but do so without letting her know you are, or else it will continue and escalate.
I bet she was upset with you. When I go somewere with out rocky (even just outside to smoke) he gets mad and lets me know. If im gone for a hour or less he will whine and carry on when I get back If im gone for a hour or more he will bark and bark and bark. At first it seems like a "wow im so glad your home i licked the cat and then rolled around on your bed" but after a bit he will stand on my tummy and it seems more like a "if you ever leave me home alone agin I will pee on you in your sleep"
