Last Thursday I picked a tick off of my Lhaso Apso. There was a blood around the area. Saturday evening my husband and I noticed a knot where the tick bite was and it felt hard and crusty. Our dog still eats well and behaves normally. What should I do about the sore?
a raised red lump and scabbing is normal after pulling a tick off that has been attached for a bit. just keep the area clean and you may apply bacitracin or neosporin to the area but it is not necessary. very very rarely will this become an infection. lyme disease takes 7 weeks to show up in a blood test so you won't be able to test your dog for lymes for at least 7 weeks. signs of lymes are alternate leg lameness, high fever usually 103 to 105, loss of appetite and sometimes joint swelling. i recommend you use frontline or advantix to minimize future tick exposure.
To scout: I have been using septi-clens on the area which is an anti-bacterial spray for dogs and cats. Some of the swelling has gone down today, however the scabby part is still there and what I consider to be bad. Our dog doesn't seem to be bothered by it. We bathed him in a flea and tick dip this evening. How long should I wait before seeing or calling a vet?
a scab itself is nothing to be worried about. if the area is oozing puss like it is infected then maybe have it checked. without actually seeing it i can't honestly tell you if you should be concerned but i have never seen a tick bite become infected. redness, lumps and scabs are all normal. puss is never normal with any thing. if it looks bad to you call the vet and have it checked. i'm sure if you just want to run him into the office and have a tech look at it for some peace of mind. we handle most of the tick calls, alot of people are very squeamish when it comes to pulling them out myself included. nasty little things they are.
Yea they are nasty things and it really doesn't bother me to pull them out. Of course they are very stubborn about coming out. It isn't oozing puss or anything so I may just continue with the antibiotic spray. If it becomes worse I will take him in. Of course he's our baby so everything to me looks bad. It is bothering me more than it is him. Thanks Scout and everyone else who replied.
My husband just checked him again, and it isn't a scab. The area is underneath the skin about the size of a nickel and hard and black. I was just told that if I didn't get the head out that the tick will grow another body and remain under the skin. My father-in-law advised us to take him in so I think I will do that tomorrow for peace of mind if nothing else. If I have been misinformed please let me know. I don't know anything about ticks and what the symptoms are after a bite. Thank-you
