I am going to copy and paste this post(it was in another thread for you but between all the slams and 'don't tie up your dog' links, I wasn't sure if you would see it)
Also, this thread is for Shiggs to read.....not to be bashed on...please create your own thread for that.
Here is what I wrote in the other thread.........
"There are ALOT of "house dogs" who never get even that much attention. They are stuck in a crate for 8-12 or more hours at a time.
Also, just wanted to say that I hope that your field of work(medicine) will lead you to great things. I realy do hope that you can someday think of your dogs as pets and hopefully make some really nice all around pits for EVERYONE to enjoy.
Just curious, have you ever thought of that? Not nessecarily losing that will to keep going, but trying to make them less dog aggressive? Many dogs were used for alot of BAD things, that is what they were created for(bulldogs for instance) However, the bulldog has been changed DRASTICALLY since his creation. But, perhaps you could look into creating a good, solid, hearty, never give up will, type of dog that IS dog AND people freindly. THEN you would be preserving the drive of the dog, but also benefiting the breed as a whole. I am not saying turn your breed into a mush pot(although alot of pits are :-D ) But getting that drive used for pulling or even better, search and rescue! Think how great it would be for the breed if you could put that drive of never giving up..... into something useful and helpful to society. In todays society, you need to think of ALOT of things. One of the things I was thinking about with you was, have you ever thought about if something were to happen to you....what would happen to your dogs? While I know you say you have no emotional attachment but how would you feel if they were taken and euthanized due to aggression? I have a chow. I had to SERIOUSELY socialize him and I still am because I NEED him to be okay in ANY situation. I have kids and I can not rely on 'what ifs" or "I shoulda's".
You seem like a nice person, I would really like to offer you this challange......if you will take it.
I would like to see you create a dog that has the never ending drive and will to please and will to keep going no matter what....however, it should be able to be around dogs and cats as well as people with NO PROBLEM. You, in my opinion, would be able to call yourself a true asset to the breed. Preserving the illegal act of dog fighting does nothing but kill innocent dogs. But NO ONE should be saying that it is wrong to take that wonderous drive from them. I just HONESTLY can see you doing SO MUCH MORE with your knowledge and adoration of the breed. I hope you stick around on this forum and possibly learn some things, and maybe teach us something.
I hope that this is not taken offencively(sp?) I just wanted to tell you what I thought. Have a good day......Maybe throw your pups a kong or a treat just for the heck of it...they always like that."
Hey Katz, this was my reply if you couldnt see it because of the other post. Please dont take anything i say offensively. Its not how i mean to put it out there.
The bottom half was a repky to someone else.
Kat, none of that was taken offensively. I respect your opinions. I understand what you are saying. If i wanted a pit without the gameness i would have staff (american staffordshire terrier) I love and respect the breed because i see how they work everyday. Its amazing to see them hit the sping pole at full speed or to grab and hang from thier burlap swing.
If you take one thing away from the breed than its no longer that breed. If you take the game away than its not a pit. Pits are not the right dog for everyone. If you cant handle it than why have it. I know and understand the breed and i know what kind of precautions i have to take because i own them.
If something ever happened to me I have a will stating that my younger brother is to inherit all all of my animals and animal related items. Except my house dog. My good friend gets him. If he is unable to take them then they will be given to another acquaintance to decide what is best for each individual dog.
No the other dogs didnt become aggressive because of being on a chain. They had been on chains all thier lives. The previous owners of two gave them to me because they were mouthy with people. I tried working with them but i wasnt successfull so they were put to sleep. The other one was attacked by another dog when he was on a chain. There was somekind of screwup on the attacking dogs chain and he got loose. He was contained in the yard by a fence. He jumped the dog still on the chain. The owner was out there and broke it up with minimal damage done to either dog. Both were still young. The dog that was attacked became a fear biter. He couldnt be kept with the other dogs because it scared him and he would bite anyone who came near him. The owner gave him to me to try and do something with him. I tried and tried but it was no use. He got me twice which was 2 times to many and he was put down.
shiggs - Do you worry about the descendents of your lines being used in fighting? Since your breeding operation has been small so far, you've been able to keep control over where the dogs go. But if you're going to be expanding.... Not everyone else is going to be able to keep things under control like you have.
Katz - I'm not trying to hijack this thread. I just want to ask another calm, rational question.
"shiggs - Do you worry about the descendents of your lines being used in fighting?"
Thats like asking a breeder if they think one of thier dogs is going to be abused at some point in the future. I do the best i can for my dogs and pups. What happens a few generations down the line i cant help. I can only give my pups the best start and keep track of them as they get older.
"Since your breeding operation has been small so far, you've been able to keep control over where the dogs go. But if you're going to be expanding.... Not everyone else is going to be able to keep things under control like you have."
I have no major plans to expand. The most dogs i keep is 10. Usually not that many. Its harder to keep up with them all. I have 3 now, 1 and pups coming, another female next month, and male and female 1st pick off a new litter. That makes 7. Im not keeping any of the pups off the litter that im getting because i didnt breed them and i dont know the sire.
I realize that. Thats why i try to keep up with people i have sold/traded to. You never know whats up for sale or whos doing what if you dont know anyone.
Ok -- I didn't know how many of the pups you planned to keep, and I was thinking you maybe planned to keep them all! You have to admit that would be a big expansion, right? No worries.
You know how much effort is required to keep the dogs apart and safe. The reason I ask is that you are breeding for a characteristic that is coincidently valued by people who want to fight their dogs. I would forgive someone who breeds goldens, for instance, for not keeping that "top of the mind."
Shiggs, are your dogs male/male, female/female aggressive? Do any of them get along with any other dogs? What about the ones in the yard that are together? What about your pups, would the male kill thepups? I'm just curious
I think the neuro-psychiatry angle would be facinating. Maybe some day you will be able to definitively prove that human- and dog-aggression in dogs are indeed separate and distinct in the brain.
Unfortunately, unless you can link up with a professor that is doing research in an area that really interests you, you have several years of classes that may feel like they are going nowhere. If you haven't already done it, I suggest you start making friends with the faculty, and let them know what your interests are.
Don't worry about it.....after a while here, you earn a "history' with people. You got yours quick! lol I was thinking about it and while everyone jumped down your throat and interogated you...no one even thought to ask this.....What are your dogs names? Also what color are they?
I love pits. They are such sweet dogs. About here though, hold your own like you have and you will be fine. Don't let them get to you. The INSTANT they disagree with something, you are shot down at every post. I have been there, done that.....and I am sure I am not done yet!!
