I was raised by a collie. As a hyperactive child in an overcrowded home, my mother often turned me out the in the yard so that could get some relief.
The yard was not fenced and was next to a busy street. Her solution for my safety was to tie a rope around my waist and the other end to her collie's collar. Ring never even let me go onto the sidewalk.
I am over fifty years old and I still remember when she had to be put to sleep (painful, degenerative arthritis with no cure in the early '60s). It broke my heart.
A woman where I work has a lovely collie named Chester. I adore that dog and he is always trying to crawl into my lap! Much to his human friend's disgust, I taught him to "kiss" on command. What a darling little man!
By the way, when do male collies get their full plumage? He is just under a year old and has a lot more hair than he did, but I thought it took about two years to develop the chest and all the pretty hair.
At the moment I have 9 rough coats, a sheltie, a pyr mix, a white schnauzer, and a springer spaniel. We do collie rescue so sometimes there are more and sometimes less but these that are here now are mine. They are really happy as we have just moved asnd now have a little over 4 acres of playground for them
Smooth or rough coated...collies are collies. They all seem to have about the same temperment. Loving and gentle especially with kids. They make a great do to do volunteer work with also. My last one in I pulled from the shelter here. He was left with a note to put him down..6 months old..because the breeder thought he had dysplasia in his hips. Turns out they are just badly bowed. Well, the others in the house ..house broke him and he is an amazing dog. He is now and has been since 3 weeks after getting him a volunteer at the local nursing home. They even made him a birthday party when he turned a year old.
As far as where they live for temperature I really couldnt tell you as we live in Mississippi but I do know that as far as grooming mine all get a quick brush a day and they do fiine. Its just keeping up with it.
I adopted a collie mix last February. She looks like a full blooded rough coat collie, but she has 1 blue eye. She is a very smart dog and she is sooo loving. I have also had a collie/shepard mix that was a sweet dog, he passed away 9/9/05. I still miss him. collies are one of my favorite breeds.
