This is my first dog--I have been brushing and combing him from day one, and he HATES it--bites the comb or brush, squirms away--it's so hard. He bites the leash when I walk him, so I had a trainer come who gave me a "vasquez" training collar--it's padded but has chains on it, so that I can correct him-besides biting the leash, he's all over the place--I could easily trip over him and fall because he's crazy, he's definitely walking ME. I watch the dog whisperer, and am really trying to exercise him a lot even though he's 14 lbs. because I want him tired. Yesterday, I had to go to the vet to get him the kennel cough vaccine, and the vet tried to give him the shot with me holding his head--he yelped and jerked back his head, so the vet had to get a tech to hold him down--the crying and yelping was so bad that I couldn't talk to the vet. The vet called him a "weeny" back when he was younger, because of the crying when given vaccines. He has a low tolerance for pain, and doesn't want to do anything that's not fun and happy. I have 2 kids and am a stay at home mom--I have a lot of time with this dog, but am really resentful of his "difficulties" I got a havanese because of the wonderful temperament--on a positive note, he plays wonderfully with other dogs, and loves kids and anyone who comes into the house. He turned one on 9/4 and is still nipping during play though. Just needed to vent. Thanks
Do you think because this is yours first dog. That your placing a lot of stress upon yourself to do everything perfectly?
I have a 6 month old JRT puppy. Who doesn't really want to be groomed at times. I have a little trick that might help. Have yourself or one of my children hold his favourite chew toy. Then try brushing and praising him at the same time!
I also get the dreaded chewing on the leash when walking Turbo. Your dog is still quite young. It could be just the puppy in him that's wants to play.
As for the vaccinations... every dog is different. Just try to be sympathetic to his fear. Turbo has these horrible melt downs when he has to have his nails trimmed. You'd think from the outside of the room. He was having all four paws removed! (LOL)
Even with what you said about your dog. He has such great qualities. His attitude when people come over and playing with your children. These qualities are the most important. The other stuff... well... just needs time and a little training. Best of luck! :)
