At 3 am, both my dogs started making noises, barking a little, and making throaty noises, and nudging me. I woke up and heard a noise in the kitchen, my son, who is 13 and a diabetic had gotten up severly low, and was stumbling around, I found him back in his room, he was talking out of his head. I checked his blood sugar and it was 30...I started giving him drinks and snacks, but it only came up to 42 in a half hour. then I started pouring the pop to him, at some point while he was drinking the pop, he came back and could talk normal to me. He had played a football game that night, and it just took him down really fast... Thank god for Max and Maggie, if they hadn't woke me up, who knows what would have happened. I would have never heard him.
That is truely amazing!!! Max and Maggie will forever be your son's hero's.....Sometimes, the greatest hero's, come in the Smallest packages! That holds true for Max and Maggie. :) Glad your son is OK!
Maxi... Riley did the same thing for my mother, except hers was extremely high, well over 1000!
The dogs know. I am so glad yours knew for your son. You should train him to let you know more clearly when it happens. I'm not sure how but I've seen them do it on tv. One dog would bring the guy soda cans when he was low.
I think the dogs can smell it coming. When people with diabetes have a "reaction" (low blood sugar), they kinda smell funny. Really sickly sweet smell.
My mom has had the islet cell transplant, and she can control her blood sugar alot better, but the downside would be that the antirejection drugs make her really sick.
Maxipoo, have you heard of the transplant?? In my opinion, it causes more problems. First of all, you are on antirejection drugs your whole life (they can cause low blood pressure, mouth ulcers, severe stomach pain), you still have to take insulin and check your blood sugar. Also my mom had the transplant done twice, the second time they punctured her liver and she almost bled to death. Its still all experimental, and there is no guarantee. Yes, you take alot less insulin, but this is not a cure, there are a lot of negative side effects.
Sorry this is so long and kinda OT, I just needed to vent. ( those doctors make me mad)
Extra special treats and lots of hugs for Max and Maggie.
Extreme low blood sugar is not joke and can cause extensive problems if not caught quickly enough. We've been dealing with several medical crisis with my mother since Jan. because of blood sugar drops down into the 20s.
Can't say how wonderful it is that your furkids got you up in time to give your son the boost he needed to get back on level.
