I am sure Lovebug has much more knowledege in the area of fur/coats. But, seeing as mine are 7 and 5 mos old. They went through what they called Puppy Uglies, where the fur allegedely gets strangly and they blow that into thier new coat. Mine did not have it to a point I noticed, although I am partial ;-)
I will say they shed less than my Lab!!!!!!

Yes they do blow their coats. Like Iluvmypoms said they go through the "puppy uglies" between 3-7 months of age. Then grow into their adults coats and then at 1 yr of age they blow it all again. The second time it comes back it usually grows in better and fuller then the first time. After that they will shed seasonally if a male and after every heat and litter if a female. If a girl is spayed she will shed seasonally like a male. I have heard that their coats do not reach their fullest potencial until they are 2 sometimes 3 yrs old but since i do not own any that age i can not say if it is true or not.

And here are some more examples just because i enjoy sharing them. It will give monkeybutt something to look at too since it is their thread and they are looking to purchase a pom soon. The uglies can be funny but some people are shocked if they didn't know ahead of time that its supposed to occur. They call up the breeder saying "my fluffy puppy isn't fluffy anymore whats wrong with her!?!?!?"

Lovebug they are all so aadorable! I am so glad you showed those phases of shedding. As I said mine are 7 and 5 mos. Paola is a Sable and Lazaro a Parti. I noticed she lost the sable for a bit and now she has gotten alot of the dark back. Laz, I have not seen as much of a difference as I have with Paola. I added some pictures, remember they had the Lion cut you do not reccomend. I am keeping my fingers crossed as they grow in, it is pretty! ;-)

Monkey!!!! Can you stand seeing all those adorable pictures? Don't you want them all?? ;-)

They are all so cute, I didnt think they were ugly at all in the ugly phase pics.

I want my puppy. A breeder I talke to had alot of questions about the breeder I was talking to Like why si she breeding so many diffrent breeds and why does she only do CKC did she not pass the AKC inspection and such. Now im re thinking that breeder.

Looking for a pup is hard.

I would have said that a bichon was good, since they are such adorable dogs, but my neighbor has one and it is absolutely psycho. By that, I mean totally hyper. I don't know if all bichon pups are like that, but it doesn't seem too good for a child.

I have a shih tzu and my mom raised two of them, also. They were sweet, quiet pups that liked to cuddle and not too fragile. They have a little more meat on their bones...they don't look like they are about to break like some small breeds.

Of course, temprament is an individual thing, no guarantees. It helps if you can see the temprament of the parents.

I hear you on that one. It is hard to find a new family member/puppy. I am still looking and still researching the breeds. Fortunately my girls do not know quite what I am up to so they are not getting anxious. It is only me that gets my hopes up high only to have them dashed. My dh changes his mind daily on weather or not we are ready for a new addition. (Mind you he is home only fifty percent of the time , and that is being generous) I however do not want to add a furbaby to the family until he is ready. So in the meantime I am researching and researching some more, while getting the house puppy proofed so i am ready the minute he decides he is ready. I will not tell the girls until he is ready to put his money where his mouth is. In the meantime I remind the girls that I am just browseing out of curiousity.

I wish we had started that way. The main reason we are getting my little girl a dog is because, this is real dumb, she wouldnt count and he teacher told us to help her with her numbers, Well she would count and then point to a number and ask what it was I would tell her we would start from the beginning and go agin. Well 30 came she asked I told her we started over 30 came she asked I told her we started over. this happend for 30 mins, and i was getting upset because I knew she was trying to push my buttions. So i take her to mike and he said if yo ucan coun to 100 with no help you can have a puppy, she said any puppy i want he said yes. I steped in and said Hun are you sure you cant back down if she pulls it off he said if she can do it no help she can have the dog. the little crap head counted to 100 with out blinking.

so now she gets a puppy and hubby knows not to make dumb deals like that with her.

At least we are all fine with getting a new dog.

I know he does not always think things through. Shes real smart but acts like she does not know things at times.

Once me and mike made a bet about her opening the trunk. I said she would do it he said she couldnt with out help loser had to cook dinner for a week. We told her to open the trunk she walked over there opened thecar door looked around and poped the trunk in less then 10 seconds. I laughed and hubby was in shock. He asked how she knew and she said well there was a pully thing with a pic of a car with the trunk open dauh.
Sometimes I think he thinks of her as his baby and not the smark little kid she is

she knows how to get what she wants Ill give her that. One day she wanted a doller i dont know why she just had to have one. well i told her to get one from her Papa, grandpa, we were going over there in a little bit. we got there she jumps on his lap gives him a hug and says in the sweetest voice "papa Do you have a doller i realy want one" he jumped up faster then I have ever seen him move and searched the house for a doller. he came back and gave her 2 instead of one.

ive been looking at chis latley. Im so stuck, I love all dogs expecaly small dogs and huge dogs. I know she wants something girly. I did find a lady who breeds the cutest chis I have ever seen. They have the big heads but not huge, they have the big ears that stick up and they are just so perfect. she has one that is black with one white paw and the inside of her ears are white. shes so cute and my little girl loves her.

though im gonna hold off a bit on looking right now we hit some trouble and just had a nice vet bill to pay for rocky. Poor guy had to get put on meds for his seasures. the vet was quite mad because the E vet we went to said wate for him to have 2 in a 24 hour period and this vet said BS is they have 2 in a month he should have been on them and with him having 2 the very first time he should have been on hem already. He also wanted to draw blood to make sure his organs could handle the meds and he found everything was ok but his eletroids were low so hes on vitmans to get those up and meds for his seasures. The vet bill was alot more then I expected. Over the phone she told me it would be $25 plus cost of meds (one was $13 the other was $11) well no one told me about the blood work witch I dont mind but it was kinda sprung on us and it ended up being over $100. I was not mad about it because what ever needs to be done needs to be done but I was a little shocked.

A toy poodle is a great first dog...It was my first and actually have had one all my life since...good luck just remember some of the breeds I have heard mentioned take a lot of energy I dont know how old your daughter is but things like Pugs and Bostons are very hyper and not as easy to train and you wouldnt want to set her up to fail.

we have a boston he was so easy to train I got him crawling on the floor, Jumping through hoops, sit, lay, down, and other tricks in just a few weeks. Hes the calmest dog i have ever had too. he just lays around sleeping, snorting, farting, and grunting. His mom, dad, and sister are on the calmer side and were easly traned as well. Hes is calmest and best behaved out of the 3 but they are all very good dogs.

I have never had a pug so i dont know much about them.

Sence shes only 6 I plann to train the dog and have her help out but I dont think it would be a good idea for her to do it her self.

Thank goodness Rocky is ok! Poor little guy. Your daughter has learned young to use her girly ways, to get her way. LOL
I had a friend that had a pug and she swore that was the best dog she ever had. I think it depends on what attracts you to what breed. For numerous reasons I had always loved Pom's. But Chi's are darn cute as well! Decisions decisons. LOL
