I think it depends on the person, some fell all rats are dirty, Others are scared of them. My husband does not like rats because his mom told him from the time he was little that rats are nasty even the ones kept as pets can kill you and are full of desise. My grandma told me the same thing but I didnt belive her. I think I stoped beliving her when a toad tinkled on my hand and no wart showed up.
My friend didnt belive me when I told her a rat was a mamal (SP) we argued about it for months. She hates rats I asked why and she didnt know.
I had a kid run down my hall screaming something about hating rats when I held out my guenea pig to see if he wanted to pet him.
I have to say I love RATS, they are intelligent, clean, and even has a sense of humor... I had 2 for the longest time, and we spent hours together just chilling and playing, darn one of them even used to chatter to me . PPL who don't like rats really don't know what a pleasure they are.
oh gosh i hate rats! when see one run across the road i get butterflys in my tummy. well for one thing they look like the momma to a mouse. i cannot take it. we live in the country and see them all the time. i know there are pet rats you buy in the store, good for the people that like them. they don't bother me that much in a pet store to look at but, when you see them in the wild, that is a different story!
I have had pet rats, my favorite was a female rat I named Tayla. She was smart, sweet and affectionate. I miss her alot, whenever I opened her cage to play with her she would climb up my arm, sit on my shoulder and chatter in my ear.
They make excellent pets, they can be trained to do just about anything. They are extremely clean and unlike hamsters or gerbils they tend NOT to bite.
We don't have rats in Alberta, but I am absolutely terrified of mice. I used to work in a cafe and they were always in the lower cupboards (under the sink). I remember a few times, opening up a cupboard and a mouse running by, or there being mice caught in the traps in the morning. I really have no reason to be scared of them, I had a friend who had them as pets and I could handle them. Wild mice terrify me, I scream, run do the whole routine.
Also, I was sleeping in my grandmas basement one night and heard a rustling sound, when I turned the lights on, a bat flew past me and settled on the rafters. I flipped out, I screamed, ran upstairs and jumped on the counter (I don't know why a counter). I've never slept down there again.
Maybe its actually the element of surprise. If you know they are there, you don't really freak out, but when they sneak up on you, it can be quite scary. But thats just my opinion.
