Last night was outside talking with some friends and this bird swoops down almost hitting one in the head, I was in shock and started to laugh. Later last night we found him at our door, The poor guy had crashed into the side of our house. Well hubby wouldnt let me bring him in last night so I put him in a bowl, Covered it with a sheet I had cut up and set him next to our house. It was real cold last night so I was worried but figured the sheet would keep the wind out and he could get out if he felt better. This morning he was gone and I was so happy thinking he had gotten better. Well a few mins ago rocky found him hopping around so i put him back in the bowl and called a vet first they said to put him back were i had first found him. I told them that was right next to my door and I have a cat that hunts and there is no way I could leave him there knowing my cat could at any time bit his head off and him not having any way of getting away. They said they could put him to sleep but it would cost alot. Im thinking first Why would it cost so much its a tiny bird, second I cant do that to him He seems kinda active for running into the side of the house and hes so prity. So she said to pu him in a box and wate if he starts to sit up more to feed him some cooked egg (that shocked me) and offer him some water. So im wating and Im kinda scared to feed him if he starts to sit up. His beek is real long and pointy.
Anyway can any of you think of anything eals I can do to help him fell better? I want to see him fly away one day. Though I dont think i want to set him free my self that beek is scarry looking.
That exact thing, almost, happened to me. and, strangely enough, with a small juvenile starling. The bird was in my yard and he couldn't fly. I caught him and he had a broken leg. I put him in a cat carrier with the following: some birdseed, a very shallow water dish (like a plate) and some rags.
My story ended different than yours, I took him to a vet and they put him to sleep for free. They told me that with those types of birds (mine was a starling) they can't live on just one leg. So, it was best. But they didn't charge me for putting him to sleep.
I would put him in a cat carrier (because if you have a cat, then you have one of those around, at least I did) and even a dog crate if it's the plastic kind and just keep him somewhere to recouperate. However, I suggest you call your local Division of Wildlife Services and see because there are certain kinds of birds that can be rehabilitated and others cannot. They might even have a team that can come get the bird. And, you want to call soon because if they can see that he is injured beyond cure, then they will put him down now so he doesn't suffer.
Oh, and be CAREFUL cuz' he can have bacteria and mites and gross things, so keep him away from your other animals and kids, and if you do use a cat carrier, then be sure to wash it out with bleach or something afterwards.

I dont think eather of those are right,His underside is bright yellow. I found that out when I opened the box and he jumped out at me. Hes one mad bird but who can blame him i mean he crashed into the side of my house I think id be mad at me too.
After he jumped at me I did notice that his underside was beat up quite a bit. Im thinking he smacked our house and as he fell his belly rubed, there is not a cut but it looks raw.
im going to try the animal rescue place, I was looking for the conversation place but I cant find it in the phone book.
i called them they told me to call a vet that I had called already and they couldnt do anything, So I told her what was going on and she said I could call the converation dept but they would only tell me to put him back and let nature take its corse and I said thats not fair because he ran into my houe and thats not part of nature she said sence he can hop and kinda glide to put him out side with a colander on top and keep checking on him that maby he will be ok enough to fly away after a wile
I had to dig out my National Geographic field guide to birds of north America ;)
It'll almost guarantee you that the bird you have is a meadowlark. there's two varieties, Eastern and Western, and both of them have yellow undersides with long and straight pointed beaks. If it were a woodpecker, the feet would be shaped like an X, that looks like the typical 3 x 1 toes in the picture.
Trhey're very similar in appearance, only the western one has a little more white on it's sides under the wings.
As your bird has no tail feathers, the reason he isn't flying off is because he's a fledgling, just learning how to fly. Apparently he hasnt quite got the hang of it and needs a day or two more for his wings to strengthen.
They eat insects, seeds and berries, if you put it into some kind of 'holdinga rea' try to offer it maybe some raspberries, or crickets, or high quality seeds like saffron seeds, thistle seeds, etc (normal wild bird seed will likely be picked through for the best stuff but most birds don't eat millet, the little brown balls that make up a large portion of cheap bird seed). Also a sturdy cup or bowl that wont tip over could work for a watering bowl. Either way you dont want the bird to loose energy from lack of food or water, which can happen very quickly with small animals like this.

MOnkey, I am sorry that no one is really helping you . That is what happened when I found my bird. People thought I was really crazy. But I told them I was responsible for the acts of nature that take place in MY YARD. They still did not understand. So, I feel for you.
Minniyar, good fact finding!!!!!
Why would you use a collander?? Seems a bit small, if you ask me. Just get a big box, like a tv box. And feed it as Minniyar said.
Give him a few days. He might need to be lifted out of the box in order to fly. So if he doesn't leave on his own, take him out in a few and see if he can get a running' start and take off.
***** I gotta tell you a story my mom told me. When she was a kid there was a robin in their yard that wouldn't fly away. She was young and they didn't know what was wrong with it. So all summer they would place the robin on a branch in the tree for the day and every night they would put the robin in a little nest they made for it in the garage! She said toward the end of the summer the bird disappeared and they like to think that it flew away. She now thinks something might have gotten it, but as a child it was a really cool experience. *****
Hes under it because thats what the lady said to use plus right this min I dont have anything other then that.
Hes only a baby? Hes a big baby real cute though. I think your right about what kind of bird he is it looks almost exactly like him. Im debating on what I should do. Im thinking maby running out and getting a bird cage would be the best thing but then agin he may learn to depend on me so then i was thinking of building a cage like thing outside were nothing could get him but bugs could get in were he could catch food him self.
I have strawberrys right now but they are frozen do you think that would be ok? Im gonna talk to hubby about it and see what we can do. He didnt want me to catch it but he knew i would, He didnt want it in the house but he knew I would as soon as he left, and im sure he wouldnt like it if he knew he was hopping around the house a few hours ago because he decited to jump at me.
Im trying to decide how hurt this bird is, He has stood on both legs, and hoped around using both legs, he even flew a bit when he jumped at me, But then all of a sudden he acts like hes hurting real bad, cant stand at all, his leg looks twisted when a few mins ago it was fine, he will spread out his wings and lay there like they are broken and he wont lift his head up. its like one min hes happy as can be and the next hes about to die. I keep checking on him and he seems ok right now. I dont know what they sound like so I keep cherping at him hoping to get him to talk but he wont answer me. Maby if I had him next to My guenea pig and got Mr. Pig talking he would talk back. well im gonna wonder the house looking for something I can use to get him a nice set up going outside. when i think of a name ill tell you.
No we dont have anything like that. My main worry is our cat. Hes the only cat around and hes mean, We always have decapated mice laying in our yard, We have had birds with there wings riped off laying in our yard, we have found a bird with no head in our yard, Hes crazy.
Why cant I bring him inside? the only reason he was in this morning was because it was very very cold out and I just rbough him back in agin because there is a tornado warning and its so windy that i was afrade he would blow away. Im shocked he didnt blow away when i went out there I almost fell over, My box blew away, I got a bigger box out of the garage and a put a bunch of rocks and a remote controll jeep in it to hold it down wile I got something (i think i was looking for a bowl) and it almost blew away. Him blowing away wopuld not have been good for him because first it would probly hurt but also there is alot of construction going on and there is a good change he would get hurt by a big truck or blew into wet cement or something like that.
There is only one vet that does birds and they said they couldnt do anything.
Im thinking im gonna name him something evil, i have not decited on his name yeat. But concerding he tryed to attack me, he almost flew into my friend last night, and his beek looks like it could kill anything.
I don't think you should bring him in because it would just stress him out even more. He's a wild animal, he needs to be outside. That way, if he can fly he will.
He probably just needs a day or two of rest and good food, and he'll start flying. I think he's just a fledgling, too. He should start flying soon.
Have you looked in trees around the side of your house where he flew from? He only flew at you and your friend trying to get away, he's probably terrified.
I don't know what else to tell you if the vet won't take him in. Do you have a state park near by? We found a bird in the state park down the road and took him to a ranger station and they helped him out.
I know hes not evil but i think a evil name would be good for him. I know a bird would never mean to attack a person.
I have no clue were he could have come from if hes still a baby, The biggest tree around is our tree and it is a tiny little tree, with barly any leaves. we live in a brand new subdivison and they riped everything out.
Ok so I should leave him outside but were do I put him outside? There is no place for him to hide, I cant put him in the box because it would blow away, this whole subdivison is totaly open. the best place he could hide would be under my bush were i put him last night but thinking about it now thats not a good place to hang out so you dont get eaten, its a small bush and its trimed up were nothing toughes the ground.
Im thinking outside would be a good place for him to but I want to make sure hes safe out there.
Monkey... I am sooooo laughing at you. OK, NOT AT you, but the whole event is just making me giggle!!!! I can just see your husband threatening you to not let that bird in the house, and there is this tornado coming and you are all worried about your baby bird. You are scooting around the house using remote control cars to hold down boxes....
It's cute. And funny!!! You SOOO remind me of myself!!!
Good work!!! I would say at this point, sure, offer him strawberries, and bugs if you can find'em. I bet he won't eat for a bit. Water is important. Maybe a neighbor has a bird cage??? People have weird things in their garages, maybe just walk around and see if someone would let you borrow something. I wouldn't buy one, honestly.
I understand that you are worried about him being outside. Just be careful, like I said he could have mites and such, and that's icky. you could lock him in a bathroom or a basement or something until the weather settles down a bit.
Oh yeah, and you are trying to get your guinea pig and your new bird to talk...??? good idea! HA HA!!!!! Like I said, not laughing AT YOU, just with you!
He died I think his underside was worse then i though it was. he wuldnt eat he wouldnt drink and he ended up dieing. poor guy I feel bad for him, I liked him alot he was so cool. by far he was cooler then any other bird I have tryed to save. When I was little and lived with my grandma birds were always flying into her windows and Id always find them and put them in a little box. sometimes i would bring them to school if my gram was not paying attion others I would be late for school because she would take me to larky park (an animal rehab place in cali its a real cool place) but all the other birds would just lay there breathing not moving at all. this guy was cool he was a fighter, i could see him fighting with other bids and stuff.
