Lately the morning walk is getting chillier and chillier, I know the freezing weather is just around the corner. So my question is, should I get a winter coat for my Cocker Spaniel? Also what about booties? Or will the fur on his feet keep his feet warm? Thanks
If its short id go for the coat if its long he should be ok.
I think shoes are more to protect there feet from glass and such then to keep them warm. Im not sure on that one but I know a lady who walks dogs in NY and she says the doggy shoes are to protect there feet from the nasty stuff in the city.
Abbie has a (fake) leopard skin fur coat for the winter, but she only wears it if she has had a hair cut and it is raining or snowing. She'll be going in October to be shaved done for the last time before winter, so she'll be wearing her coat after that. Dori is also getting her hair cut so now she'll need one too!
His hair is short on is back some what feathered on this tummy and legs. May just one of those half coat things to keep his back warm in the winter. My neighborhood is pretty clean, so I guess I don't have to worry about the booties. Thanks
I was wondering the same thing!! My pom puppy hasn't gotton his adult coat yet and I'm debating if I should get him a coat so he can have that extra insulation on our walks.. I know pom coats are usually really thick full grown so I don't know yet.
Any dog who lives in the house should wear a coat when they go outside in winter. It's a common misconception that if the dog has long hair it will be warmer than it's smooth counterpart. Not true. for example, take my breed, the dachshund. The longhair is finer and thinner than the smooth and offers less protection.
The reason that all house dogs should have a coat no matter the size, is that a house dog has not gotten the thick coat that outside dogs do in winter.
Booties are not only to protect feet from cold. They also prevent dirt and ice balls from forming in the fur and between the toes which can cause damage to the feet. All of my dogs have sweraters, coats and booties for winter, and rainy weather.
I have a coat but only use it when it is extremely cold, windy, wet (like snowing) or you are staying out for an extended period of time. You can usually tell if your dog does not want to go out in the cold or it is shivering, then a coat will probably help. I have one Min Pin that loves to go out no matter what and another that is a little thinner and does not like to go out in the cold.
When you bring your dog in and it has been running around in the snow, I would check the paws for any ice and snow between the pads. You would probably want to wipe off the feet anyway so your dog won't dirty up your carpets.
The coats that have the velcro strip around the underside and the front are the easiest for me to use.
Hey thanks Umm it can get pretty cold. I live in Phila. PA (don't laugh) So the winter can get as cold as 0 or below and our snow fall is off and on. We seem to get one bad snow a year. But the good thing is the people in my neighborhood are good about clearing the side walks. It sound like its a good idea for me to get one and have it handy. Thanks everyone.
This year im hoping to get rocky a custom leather coat. We have never been able to find a coat that fits him just right in a pet shop. but i was able to find a leather place that will let him come in get measured and then they will make him a coat.
the reson rocky has a coat is because he gets so cold that he will not go out to pee unless he has it. when he would finaly go out with out it (befor we bougth him one) he would shivver so bad he would pee down his legs.
I didnt know they get a diffrent coat if they are inside dogs.
I was wondering the same thing. My dog is almost 7 months and is short haired (like a lab but she is a mix) but her coat is very thick. I only ever see coats for small dogs. Where do you buy one for a 40lb dog or should I not bother? We are outside of DC so it can get cold but rarely below 20 degrees with some snow. How do you introduce your dog to a coat anyway?
Go for it! I love buying my dog's new coats for the winter, they love them too. I get them the whole works. Coats, scarves, hats with the little bobbles lol. Good luck with the booties..mine never kept them on, except my basset..actually, she just slept in them in the whole time.
travelnurse74, check out ebay..you can pretty much get any size coats on there.
Well he is two, but a total inside dog. He only goes out to go potty and for walks. Well maybe the best thing to do is shop around for one and have it ready in case he gets cold.. mmm I could even ask my grandmother to make one.... !! Thanks all.
