I found out yesterday that my puppy has tapeworms and roundworms. The vet gave me drontal plus to give to him but i haven't yet because his stools are very watery and i'm afraid he will just pass the pill. we have been trying to keep the yard picked up (even making bald spots in the grass from trying to get it clean), but i've read he can just pick up the worms again if he ingests any grass or dirt that is contaminated. does anyone have any advice about 1. the drontal 2. if we should use a pesticide to get rid of fleas/flies 3. anything else to help??? thank you!
ok...i just talked to the vet and it's good that i didn't give him the drontal yet. phew! but i guess diarrhea is not good and i'm on my way to pick up antibiotics, natural bacteria, and something else the vet says i need. why can't this baby just get better!!
I would go on and give him the Drontal because the parasites are what is probably giving him the diarrhea. Does he stay outside? If so, there is nothing much you can do but keep him dewormed regularly and clean up after him everyday. I would probably let him play somewhere else outside and use the bathroom and keep him away from the grass that is contaminated.
How old is your puppy? If you just changed his food, that could be causing diarrhea as well.
Dogs get tapeworms from ingesting fleas. If you have your dog on both flea and heartworm medication, you will *greatly* reduce your dog's chances of getting either tapeworms (from fleas) or roundworms (from the yard). Heartguard and Interceptor both guard against heartworms, hookworms and roundworms, and interceptor additionally guards against whipworms. So the pill is it's own monthly wormer.
Most puppies get roundworms from their mothers, some get it from the infected poop of other dogs (by sniffing it).
Keep your dog away from dog poop and make sure to clean up all the poop in your own yard on a daily basis.
cooper has been sick since the day we got him...everyday is such a struggle and we've only had him since august. he has had his monthly interceptors and frontline. i just don't know what to do! we keep the yard clean and don't let him eat anything outside (if possible) today, the vet put him on metronidazole, lactobacillus, and endosorb... says we have to wait until his stools are firm to give the tape worm medicine. now my fiance is wanting to talk about giving him back. i'm so upset right now.
agentcooper, Please don't give up on him. A pet is something that is with you good and bad. Hang in there and the good will come. You are growing a bond with this dog that in a few months you will look back and wonder why you even thought about giving him up. Best of Luck, it will get better, you will see.
