My father, who breed Akitas and Boston Terriers for 25 years only gave a 30 day health agreement. You cannot possibly be responsible for a dog for a year...that is too many shots, too many trips to the vets, too many feedings, too much exposure to other dogs, kids, my God, what can happen to a dog in a year due to owner negligence!!!
My father would replace or give a refund for 30 days...with one catch: You brought the puppy back...even if it was dead.
We had one "scammer" that tried to say the puppy died a week later, and when we asked for the body, we never heard from them again.
Hi everyone, Wanted to let you know the outcome! It is actually funny! I told her this morning that I wanted the puppy back and I wanted the vet info. She would not give it to me. She said she had not decided yet if she was giving her back. WELL! Her husband called and spoke to my husband ( I was in a counseling session). He said his wife is a "nut job" and that the dog is magnificent! He adores her. The reason she will not give me vet info is because the vet ripped them up one side and down the other for what they did to her ears. Hubby freely admits that it is all their fault. He also said he would not give her up for the world and will be getting her all the correct vet care she needs! My husband was very relieved after the conversation. Appearently she thought she should have no other costs except shots! But I have learned VALUABLE lessons from all this. Puppy application will be added to my site immediately. I will want personal and vet references. I will trust but I will verify! Thanks for that! Thank you all for being so supportive through this. I intend on keeping in touch with the husband, so I can get good information on her. As I do with all my puppies! Man! People are crazy! And I am going to rethink my puppy health contract. A year is a long time. And I will never refund with out recieving the puppy back. This did give me a chance to reconnect with everyone who has a Lavelle Doberman and I am so proud to say that all are happy! I actually got a letter and picture from one girl yesterday. It was so nice it made me cry! Again that you all and love this site!
Well I am glad to hear everything has worked out for you. At least her husband was nice enough to call you and let you know about the puppy. If I were you I would do my contracts and applications over too to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. She did sound like a nut job. She just didn't want to take responsibility of the vet bills is all it was. Glad to hear everything turned out for the best.
OMG that woman sounds like a psycho!! I'm glad at least the husband seems to be nice. I like to talk to people for a couple months before I have pups due, but it's not always possible.........I still have 5 looking for homes.
I actually talke to them for about 3 weeks by phone before I sold her! I thought the woman was okay! BUt I am changing alot of my policies regarding my dogs as a result. So I am grateful it all happened. I am not expecting another litter till late summer 2007, so that gives me plenty of time to redo contracts and add pupp applications to the website. I am just happy that the truth is that she is okay. That is all that really mattered to me. I have one of her sisters, Kiera, my first cropped dobie and she is doing great! As soon as I can figure out how to dogster.com (LOL!) I will post pictures here. I am grateful for a truthful supportive site. That is not always the case for a breeder.
Thank you! She is in Boston, which I think is huge! I am a country girl, so I can not imagine! But I have not heard from her since her husband called. I am still hoping for pictures, but glad her hubby says all is well! It sounds like the vet really laid into her for what happened. Our site is Lavelledobermans.com I do NOT have puppies for sale (don't want to break the rules here!). I will be adding more pictures this week. Wanted to wait for some fall color, but we have had alot of rain and the colors this year are dull. Bummer. I am pleased to say that I am still getting emails waiting my puppies. So next year's litter will have new approved families before they are here. Let me know what you think of my babies!
This kind of thing happens often when you ship dogs to ppl. Most responsibly breeders have a waiting list for each litter and will not ship unless the ppl have been totally vetted. While I seriously doubt you are legally obligated to do anything other than offer to take the dog back and refund, I woul personally make every effort to get the animal returned to me.
This person seems clueless.... heads up: the dog smells like a dog because it IS A DOG, and feeding crappy adult food to a 14 week old pup... well that speaks volumes.
Of course if ppl stopped cosmetically mutilating their dogs half of these problems would not occur.

Thank you all so much for the advice! Ann - thank you for the compliments! I will email you later today. I will have more pictures up this week. I do believe I am a very responsible breeder. I spoke to these folks for weeks. As I said I am changing my policies as a result of this. My faith beliefs cause me to be too trusting. But to learn and not change.... silly. My attorney will be helping me redo my contract. I have a waiting list for my next litter and will be doing applications and vet checks while my Hazel is still pregnant. That will not be until spring/summer of 2007, so I have time. I do believe that the husband is telling me the truth and I expect pictures soon. I tried my hardest to get her back, but they will not send her. According to the husband, he adores her and all the health probelms are being addressed. The wife did apologize for the smell thing! She said she is nuts and I was right, 1., she was bathing way too much and 2., puppies, especially puppies with infected ears, smell! LOL! I LOVE puppy smell, and puppy breath. I know nuts. As for the food, unfortunately I can only give advise. To make sure I wasn't incorrect, I polled 24 vets in 2 states, ALL said never give a puppy that young adult food. They should be at least 6 months old. But I can not control that at all. I have shared that info with them. Anyway, I am still getting requests for puppies from this litter and my waiting list continues to grow. I will keep all posted on any new developments and please keep watching my Isabelle and Otto grow! Ann - I will meail you later!
