We thought about a Pug for a second dog but changed our mind when we read that you should never walk a farther distance from your home than you would be willing to carry them back. They will sometimes just plop down and that is as far as they go. Between that and the heat intolerance, we decided on another Min Pin.
We do take our dogs to Petsmart, car cruises, dog events in our area, etc. to help with the socialization. Dog parks don't do much because there is hardly ever any dog in the small dog area and my dogs get too excited to let them in with the big dogs.
Our dogs get their 3 walks a day and they love it but that does not socialize them as much as I like so we work hard on that too.

My 8 month old Beagle/Peke mix gets walked once a day. I don't know how far we walk but we walk from 20min to 30min. The days we don't walk are when it's raining really hard outside (or snowing, for the coming winter) and we don't walk her either if she's gone to daycare or the dogpark.
LPN, your statement about pugs is so funny. I have a friend who has a pug and I got to talking to them about their walks, and they say they never take him. I was a bit upset, but then they explained that after like 1/2 a block they had to pick him up and bring him home. And he was really young!!! ------------------------------------------ Yep, learned the hard way. I have taken our male with us a couple times when we tae the beagle for a short walk, and he made itabout 1/3 of the way, and had to be carried back. He sat down, he'd had enough and wasnt doing that crap anymore, lmao.
Just because you dont walk your dog does not mean they dont get socal time.
I have not walked rocky in over a year (you wouldnt eather if you had to lug a 27 lb thing home) but he gets to know alot of dogs. he has free roam of our yard witch gives him all kinds of chances to get to know other dogs. One of the yorkie pups (not the evil dad one of the cute little girls) comes over almost every day wagging her whole body playing with us, tuesday he got to know a husky that one didnt go to well the husky sniffed him and rocky came running to mom then went back to sniff him but the husky got to the sniff first and he hid behind a guy and freaked out when he found out it was not me LOL. He knows a little white and black dog and he makes sure to get t know everyone who comes in the yard. You would be shocked on how many people and dogs decide to check out our yard. Its funny when a dog gets out our house is the first place they go and just random people walk though our yard.
Cody get 3 walks a day, two of them are about 30 mins. long and one is 15 - 20 mins. he loves walks and is usually well behaved on them and this is also the time he does his big jobs so we have to go prepared with baggies! He then has his race around time in the house around 8:00 every night and any extra playing my guys do with him. He is lots of fun! Now socialization is different, we take Cody to all kinds of events, to PetSmart and Petco, the dog parks, basically wherever we go he goes! he loves to go to Grandma's in Pittsburgh, PA. and see all cousins there! he is a very social doggie! He really likes people and most other dogs, there are a few he doesn't care too much for, but then there are a few people I am not to fond of, so I quess it is ok for him to not like a few too! lol

Honestly, I walk my cocker once a day and my lab maybe 4 times a week. Before you all jump down my throat let me explain why he only gets walked that often. I use to walk him about a mile everyday until one day he took off after another dog. I had his leash wrap around my wrist at the time. When he took off he pulled me down to my knees before I ever let go of the leash. I wound up with torn cartilage and tendonitis all through my arm. I had to have surgery 2 days later to repair all of the damage. I had a cast on my arm for 8 weeks. He is just to strong for me to handle. My hubby now has to be the one to walk him. Now for those of you who feel bad for him, don't. He goes to day camp 3 days a week. My hubby drops him off on M,W,and F. He gets to go and play with all of the other big babies. He always seems to come home tired and always gets excited when he sees the place.
