i bought a dog from a shelter in oklahoma today and they didn't tell me that it has mange but i took it to the vet like i always do when i adopt a new pet i did notice some thing funny about the way his hair looked but they told me it was because he was a pup and he hadn't grew all of his hair yet anyways he has whats know as red mange and the vet said theres nothing for him he did suggest i dip him and i bought the dip for him and i don't know what else to do can any one give me advice please it would be greatfully appreciated.
Interceptor which is really a heartworm med can be given to help with mange...It depends on how old the pup is and what kind of mange it is. Did the vet do a skin scrape? You can also give benedryl to help with the itching. I buy the Equate brand from walmart in capsule form and just pop it in their mouths.
Demodex Mange is pass on thru the mother. Is hard to get rid off but it can be controled. Stress will make it act up. If your dog has demodex, you need to talk to your vet about the possibilities of dipping him with Mitaban Dip (this has to be done at the vets office) is not an over the counter dip. Usually is done every 15 days. In addition most dogs with Demodex will develop a skin staff infection with is treated with antibiotics. Keep the stress level down and speak to your vet. If he tells you there is nothing to do consult another one.
you are correct it smells like rotten eggs, and the worse part is that you can neither dry or blow dry the dog. But it sure works, also I have forgotten to mention that an Ivomec shot will be in place. The majority of demodex cases that I have seen are on Am Staff or Pits. It is so uncomfortable for them. I do hate dips but in this case there is not too many options.
