We last saw/heard him at about 1am, when my brother left to go to the pharmacy. Woke up at 4:30 and he's no where to be found. It's 6am now, and still pitch black outside, so can't see a thing. We've put up fliers, and searched the neighborhood calling his name, but nothing. What can you do at 6am when your dog is missing?
I'm so sorry.. My husky ran away about a month ago, but I my boyfriend found him waiting at the buss stop.. hehe. I live in a big city and I feared most that he was gonna be hit by a car and cause an accident and maybe hurt someone else. I know what your going through this was also in the middle of the night. (he had jumped out the window.. dumb dog) he was gone about 7 hours. Just try to keep your cool and visit the shelters nearby and keep your hopes up. I'll be praying for you and your benji.
Benji seems to have a death wish. He was attacked by a coyote about two years ago, and now every time he hears the coyotes, he's out barking at them like he's gonna get them back....he's 7 lbs!
I just went out on foot looking for him, but no luck. I'm hoping that someone found him and kept him for the night, and plan on calling us in the morning (its still pretty early here). But, shortly after my original post, I heard the coyotes outside doing their victory chant. I just hope it wasn't him.
Now let me vent a little....do I have a right to be just a little upset that I had to cancel my trip for the weekend because I was not going to allow my dad to stay home alone while his dog is missing, and my mom is out of town, meanwhile the person that let him out is still in bed? I went to bed at 3:45, and have been up since 4:30 looking for him.

I am so sorry for your loss. I pray you find him, I know how it is to lose your baby like that. My grand-daughter let her boston terrier out with their english bulldog to go potty, when she went to let them back in, Lucy the bulldog didn't want to come in, she kept looking at the highway. When the boston wouldn't come to her, my granddaughter got scared and started searching for him. The boston was 12 years old and on seizure medication, she had Bean since she was 8 years old, and she is 20 now, and he loved her so much, but that was 4 months ago, and we have searched for him high and low, flea markets, newspapers, and nothing. Some one stole him, we are sure. He loved people, and loved to "go bye, bye" A week later, someone tried to get the bulldog too. They were seen by her, and took off fast. There are people out there who don't realize the bond between our pets and us. Our pets are a part of us, and nothing can replace them. We all still get teary eyed when we look at pictures and videos that have Bean in them. I pray that you find him safe and sound.
Aww, I'm sorry about Bean. Don't lose hope though, I had a bassett hound as a teen that took off one day, and then returned more than six months later. She was such a sweetheart, we think someone was keeping her, and then she finally escaped and came back home. I don't think Benji was kidnapped, it was 1am and we live on a very quiet street, so my bro would have seen anyone outside. I just fear the coyotes, since Benji seems to have no fear of them.
We've already lost one Yorkie to the coyotes. Some friends of my dads gave us Todo because they couldn't keep him, because he would always run away. Well, surprise, he did the same here. I let him out to go potty in the backyard one night, and he found a way out of the fence. A few days later, I came home a little by came running up to me asking if I had a little black dog, and said he was in his backyard. I got so excited, until I got there and found that he had my dogs half eaten body in his backyard. Then, we lost Ender last year, a Yorkie that someone dumped at my moms work, she drowned in the pool. I can't bear to tell my mom she lost another one.
Strangely though, Merphy doesn't seem the slightest bit upset, so I'm hoping thats a good sign. If not, my dog is deranged.
i hope he shows up soon. its hard to wait and wonder. we have coyotes here too. sometimes they come pretty close to the backyard. its all woods behind us. i dont let the dogs out alone, even though our yard is fenced, just for that reason. i would think they would be afraid to get too close to our yard because of harley, our gsd, but no, they still get pretty close. hopefully someone just took him inside and will return him to you. the one that let him out is still in bed ? isnt that the way it usually goes....
I can't say that I know how you feel but I've always feared having my 6yr old husky/lab mix run away. She can't be off leash. I feel sad for you and Benji's disappearance and I hope like the others that someone took him in for the time being. I really hope you get him back.
Still no sign of Benji. I've gone to both shelters and the humane society, put fliers at the vets and Petco. I went down to the gully in our backyard, but no sign of him. I'll be putting an ad in the paper on monday and will keep checking back at the shelters and hs. I'm about to go back out on foot to look for him and ask around.
it looks like you have done all you can. its such a helpless feeling, knowing they are out there somewhere, but not knowing where or even if they are okay. i hope the dog turns up soon and in good health. you may feel better going out on foot and even door to door . kids are a good source of info too. you may want to put the word out with the neighborhood kids. good luck and i pray that he is found safe, sound, and soon !
I'm going out now, and will go door to door. I don't know if we have any kids in our neighborhood, but hopefully I will find some. I feel so horrible for my dad. He can't even talk without getting choked up. Benji's his baby.
Thanks Wiley, my dad said a prayer this morning, but I will try that too. I'll do anything.
Merphy's finally realized somethings not right. Every time he hears a dog bark, he goes out to see if its Benji. Other than that, he's just moping around and sulking in his crate.
Just got back from going door to door. I don't know what to think. The people who live directly around us have all said that they heard the coyotes out last night, and a lot of them. But then I've had a lot of people offer to help. The lady a couple houses behind me is going to send her son out to look in the canyon as soon as he gets home. Many others are offering to scour their backyards.
I'm going to look into all of the advertising options now and see if I can arrange anything before monday. I feel that there's something more I should be doing, but don't know what else to do.
I'm sorry that your dog is missing and I hope you find him soon.
It sounds to me like you've done everything you possibly can to find him. The only thing I can think of is to put the flyers on the doorsteps of any people who weren't home when you went door to door. Maybe on parked cars along the street too?
He's not really one to run usually. He loves to go in the front yard, but he's always supervised and doesn't go past the curb. Since he was attacked two years ago, he seems bound and determined to get revenge on the coyotes. He's a 7lb Yorkie...needless to say, he'd lose, just as he did the first time. We were lucky that he survived the first attack, I don't know that we'd be lucky enough the second time around, since the only reason that he survived was that my uncle scared the coyote off of him.
We live on 5 acres, but only use one of them. Beyond the fenced in acre is a canyon and a gully. There are coyotes and the occasional mountain lion out there. The first time he was attacked, the coyote literally grabbed him when my dad, uncle and his adult son were a few feet away, so they're definitely not afraid. We've lost at least one dog, possibly our bassett hound, a few cats and a duck to the coyotes. We've had one climb or jump over the fence before. In all the places I've looked, I haven't seen any sign of a struggle. When Todo was killed, they left his remains in a neighbors backyard, so I'd imagine that we would be able to find Benji's too. The neighbors son is gonna go look in the canyon, and I'm gonna see if my brothers will hike down there with me tomorrow, or pay someone with a dirt bike to go look. The people I really want to talk to are not home (when the coyote grabbed Benji, he took him into their backyard).
We had our gardeners put fliers on everyones doors this morning and then I followed up door to door later. We also paid the ice cream man to hand out fliers to all the kids to give to their parents. We gave him 40 fliers, and he asked for more, so we gave him 30 more, and he's gonna come back tomorrow for more. I'm trying to get ahold of the paperboy to see if he can help. I'm currently putting out online ads on various discussion boards and websites. Our local papers website sucks, so I don't think I can do anything with that until Monday.
Thank you to everyone for your kind words, prayers, thoughts and concerns, I truly appreciate it. I will keep you all updated.
Well, we don't know for sure where or how he got out. All we know is that the last time anyone saw him for sure was when my brother left for the pharmacy, Benji got up to bark at him when he opened the door. We think that he may have snuck out the door while my brother was kissing his fiance goodbye. If thats the case, then we don't have a fence in the front yard.
It is possible though, that he went out in the backyard and found a way out there. The backyard is fenced, and we did not find any evidence that he got out that way. But, there is something that is pulling Merphy's toys through the fence, so something could have just as easily pulled Benji through the fence, as some of Merphy's toys are bigger than Benji. But, it is also hard to believe that he snuck out the front door too, since he had a collar on with his ID tag, license and a bell....he makes a lot of noise when he walks. So, I really don't know...and I think thats the worst part right now is just not knowing.
