Too often people treat little dogs like "toys" instead of dogs. They are just as capable of doing ANYTHING a big dog can do. I can't stand seeing them pushed in strollers and wearing clothes all the time, they're dogs!!
And yes they will be loyal and (try) to protect you!! Although a big dog may be more intimidating, a small dog can do just as much damage :)
I third that comment (second was taken lol). I have 2 poms and 1 lab. They were both easy to train, one was not smarter than another. They will both protect me. I think it is just the fact they are loyal despite the size. ;-)
luvmypoms - I dress my dogs too. But its typically just bandanas, halloween costumes, and in the winter the occassional jacket. (And orange safety vests). I mean those that buy pj's and actual outfits for the dogs to wear....that kind of freaks me out. Especially when its in a stroller or something lol.
I saw a lady with a yorkie in a stroller in the mall, I thought it was pretty neat. She got to take her dog in the mall with her, we had to leave somebody in the car with ours, cause it was so hot outside. I can't imagine schnauzers riding in a stroller though. Maybe when they were babies!
I have a range of large and small dogs. I find that intelligentce does not go by size but does sometimes go by the breed. In my very very personal opinion Samoyeds are beyond the dumbest dog on the planet. I am forced by other family memebers to own one and i can't stand him, and that is coming from an extreme dog lover.
As for protection i would trust my life to my pack of pomeranians. Maybe it would be differant if i had just one pom but i have 5 and they'll go physco like little wolves and would protect me with their own lives.
LoL whats a little funny is they sense my distane for our samoyed and so they hate him too and won't let him come near me. Its amusing :)
I knew of a client with a small poodle. She was an elderly lady who lived alone. Someone broke into her home through a window. The little poodle started biting the mans legs and made such a fuss that the burgler left back out the window. People are so afraid of being bitten I guess it doesn't matter the size. I also read somewhere that by just having a dog that barks when it hears a noise is a deterrent.
