Luv, Red is a recognized AKC color for solid colored poodles.

There is a distinct difference from the apricot color.
Here is a page with all the colors allowed by AKC.

AKC also accepts Parti's and Phantoms but not for the conformation ring.
Red is allowed in the conformation ring.

Karri,

As a solid color sure they can be shown.. But under colors for AKC standard I don't see red as a listed color is what I meant.

Although its probably on the registration papers.

Color
The coat is an even and solid color at the skin. In blues, grays, silvers, browns, cafe-au-laits, apricots and creams the coat may show varying shades of the same color. This is frequently present in the somewhat darker feathering of the ears and in the tipping of the ruff. While clear colors are definitely preferred, such natural variation in the shading of the coat is not to be considered a fault. Brown and cafe-au-lait Poodles have liver-colored noses, eye-rims and lips, dark toenails and dark amber eyes. Black, blue, gray, silver, cream and white Poodles have black noses, eye-rims and lips, black or self colored toenails and very dark eyes. In the apricots while the foregoing coloring is preferred, liver-colored noses, eye-rims and lips, and amber eyes are permitted but are not desirable. Major fault: color of nose, lips and eye-rims incomplete, or of wrong color for color of dog.

Parti-colored dogs shall be disqualified. The coat of a parti-colored dog is not an even solid color at the skin but is of two or more colors.

Luvs, the color does not have to be listed to be accepted. As long as it is not listed or defined on the breed standard.

Also the color codes on the registration sheets vary breed to breed. People get bug sup their behinds to have all sorts of fancy color names. Then, sometimes, they decide to clear all of them out. The Chi club of example has like 27 colors listed or something crazy. My breed has a handful, although we have tons of shades and variations.

Let me add that if they have black pigmentation and red coats, then they are red. There are basic colors in genetics and red is one of htem, no matter what lable we wish to place on it.

To continue my commentary. In afghans we often get dogs who have blue/gray masks instead of black masks. These are ligitimatly masked dogs who will produce masked offspring dependent on what dogs they are bred to. However, our color registration does not have blue mask as an option and the parent club would have to approve the color to have it added.

However, it is not disallowed in anyway. It is simply not listed on our color registration charts, which are incredably simple.

Chessies are the same way to be honest.. Any color but black.

One persons dead grass is another sedge and so on..

Kind of why I would like to see pictures go along with pedigrees.

PS. I know standards can't cover every small detail and what covers is the solid color part. What color eye rims, lips, and nose should a red have? I would follow what it says for apricot, right????

Cool. Thanks for clearing it up. I've always been lead to believe that the red poodle was apricot...... but it seems I've been lead wrong.

You have a few types of red:

Red - black nose rims and eyes. Dog will prob have dark eyes but we all know that one can change eye color with selective breeding.

Brown Red - Dogs with brown nose pigment. The pigment means that the dog has the black pigment restriction gene. Add a dilution factor and you are going to be confused.

False reds - Diluted browns. Dilute a brown again and they turn redish looking. Dilute it again and they turn pinkish looking.

Problem is we visualy select for color. Thats one reason that I am participating in color genetic studies.

Do you find judges that discriminate against the different colored masks?

What I mean is you and I both know that some judges don't start out with a breed because they want to be able to judge all breeds or several others. So they go by the breed standard.

Chessies used to have the color Liver as a DQ or undesirable color, the club took it out because everyone defined liver as all kinds of shades..

Not beyond the normal problem of personal taste.

Many still find black masked reds to be the perfect example of afghan hounds. That is a problem with breeds that come in many colors. We all have an image of perfection and for many, that also includes a color.

The blue masks are often so smokey that they simply tint the face and ends of hte muzzle. From my litter, Sahli's mask is very hard to see, yet when you wet her face it is clear as day. It started to fade around 4 weeks of age.
