Well, my wife and I adopted a 6 month old German Shepherd puppy from the local rescue league last weekend. He's a very adorable and fun pup and, for 6 months old, amazingly calm and docile as compared to the Labs we've had in the past (and present, actually).
The thing is, this is the first male dog either of us has ever had and we noticed that he doesn't have the leg-lifting thing down yet. He just sort of stops....takes care of "business"..and then keeps on doing what he was doing (which at this point is usually chasing down our 5 year old Lab mix). Can I assume he will eventually figure out the leg-lift? I don't think the neighbors would appreciate me out in the yard showing him how. LOL
Oh, and yes.....here's the pics (I hope) :)
His name is Kaiser as a nod to his German heritage.
Actually neutered or not only about half of all male dogs ever lift their leg (i'm pretty sure its half, don't quote me cause i didn't recheck my research before posting lol). Some squat just as you have described. It is completely normal. I have one that squats but also lifts one foot just a touch off the ground at the same time and its rather amusing watching him balance that way.
Yeah, it was just an info type question more than anything. Doesn't really bother me one way or the other. Just kind of assumed it was normal for males to lift. And yes, he's neutered. The league we adopted from does that automatically before animals are put up for adoption.
Think that it differs from dog to dog, but have found that some males don't lift their leg to mark territory until perhaps 9 months or so. That IS what the hiking of the leg is.
They try to mark as high as possible, both as a warning (other males/critters...see how BIG I am?) and as an invitation (to the females). It CAN be rather amusing to see a really small breed dog tilt about 3/4 of the way sideways to mark something as high as possible. I'm a BIG dog!
Good for you adopting!!! I love to hear it. He is super cute. My male dog from childhood always lifted he leg he was a shepard collie mix, My male dog now a cocker spaniel, does what even suits the moment. On a walk he will lift his leg on trees and such. In the yard he will switch back and forth. Have fun. He looks really sweet.
my pug, neutered at 6 months, does both. he didn't start lifting till about 10 months. sometimes it's a full lift, sometimes a half lift, sometimes a squat. i think it depends on the dog and the situation too.
Bowen's been neutered since 6 months or so, and is half and half on leg lifting. If he's marking where another dog marked, he lifts his leg. If he's by himself in the back yard, he's morelikely to just squat.
Riddick is nearly 2 years old now and kinda.. partially lifts his leg. He doesn't seriously hike it the way some dogs do... I actually wonder if he's imitating bowen.
