Wondering, we all make mistakes as pet owners, what is the worst one you made and would you want to warn others so they dont make it?
Me...our golden was barking barking barking ( he was a barker)....we didnt look right away and when we did nothing was seen. An hour later we went outside to find him lying there unresponsive. What else? Feeding coffee ice cream for sure!
Yeah I didnt want this to be about him, wanted to know what others have done that they regret--and we ALL have something we've learned from!!! No he didn't make it and it was incredibly traumatic for our whole family. What is different now? No more kennel outside. My dogs go out WITH us period. They are never ever out of our sight. Just noticed the other post, no he was not an outside dog but we had an outdoor kennel that he was put in a few times a day.

wow poison? thats sad. my thing i regret the most with bentley is not socializing him like i should of and i regret it daily. he barks at every one that comes to the door and wont stop barking. im wondering if 11 months old is to old to try to socialize him- also the potty pads, i started bentley out on pads and now since july ive been taking him outside but boy that was the biggest mistake, im not going to make this one with daisy , i take her out side with bentley, she does have pads in her xpen when im at work but i am now only working part time 4 days a week for 6 hours a day so now i can be home more with them . Im going to socialize daisy very early on im giong to take her to petsmart a few times a week and get her out more with other ppl and dogs, shes only 11 weeks old and hanst had her current shots so im unable to start just yet but believe me this was the worst mistake ever-
Gee, if I were to post here what my biggest mistake was, it would be a lie -- because at that point, my biggest misktake would be ADMITTING ON THIS FORUM what my biggest mistake was -- so I could be continually hounded about it forever.
my biggest mistake was not socializing thunder very much. we took him to dog classes, and walked him around our neighborhood, took him to the beaches and stuff, we thought it was enough but it wasnt. so when we got scout i went overboard with her and crammed socialization down her throat. she went everywhere with us, i walked her outside supermarkets and malls since the day i got her. because of all that i now have a dog that i can trust without a doubt in every situation i put her in. i dont have to worry about kids, other animals, etc. she is bomb proof. sometimes all the socialization in the world wont change a dogs genetic predisposition to be a certain way but i'll never know at this point if it would have made a big difference with thunder. but from now on every pup i get will be raised like i raised scout so they are at least given the opportunity to be the best they can be.
you know, scout. That was an awesome tip. I have always had a problem with Tsion barking at everything. I wonder if that would have helped. I have a bark collar now for when people are around. wonder if taking him to the mall would help now, hes 18 mos????
To Riley, the op said she put her dog out for potty breaks, please remember the dog died. some sensitivity would be nice. I recall us all standing up for you when Riley was run over, and some tactless people said it was your fault. maybe now would be a good time to pass it on.
Thanks Thelma, but I'll pass on the advice. I don't appreciate the sudden rude-ness from you for apparent reasons... not just here. That's all I have to say about that.
And yeah, an hour outside unsupervised...not even looking to see the reason for barking... leads one to believe the dog was always outside unsupervised barking... sorry for the loss, but thats why I advocate against dogs being kept outside. I am glad you learned from it Kristen, sucks it had to be that way.

Like I said he was not outside 24/7 we've never had "outside" dogs never believed in it and frankly in NH there really arent many people that DO that. I dont know any. We have hot hot humid summers and too cold winters it's just not possible for them to be out in the elements like that. Anyway I'm not going to argue because frankly there's no way to prove anything....maybe digging through pictures of our goldens inside but even that wouldnt really be proof other than they were inside then.
