whats the maximum amount of time for a dog to be potty trianed. We have a 11 month old Shih-tzu, and she still has atleast 1-2 accidents a day. We scold her and put her in her crate. But most of the time, she is out of it, because we arent crate training her or anything.
Personally I'm of the opinion that a dog more than 8-9 months ought to know better, assuming you have been consistent with the housetraining.
Tell me this, when she is going potty in the house, are you actually catching her in the act, or are youc oming across the wet spots a few seconds after she's walked off? How are you housetraining her? Are you training her to go on puppy pads, litter box or outside only? In my experience, that's the down side of training them to go in specific locations inside, they're never fully housetrained. There are exceptions of course. When you take her outside for a walk, do you keep her on a leash and reward her every single time she goes outside?
When you catch her in the act of going potty, nstead of putting her in the crate You need to pick her up immediately even if she is still going (and I'd be pretty firm and not nice about it) take her outside and keep her outside until she goes, then treat and reward. But ONLY if you actually catch her in the act of going potty inside. If you aren't, keep her on a leash in the house at your side 100% of the time so you NEVER miss her going potty in the house. Also, what are you using to clean up the pee sppots, dogs tend to go where they've already gone potty so you may need to be using an enzymatic cleaning.
