there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting a mutt from the shelter. impo, one dog is no better then another just because it is a purebreed. they all deserve the same level of care and compassion no matter what they are. the arguments you will see on this board over mutts and purebreds, are not over the animals themselves, but rather over the breeding ethics of those breeders who intentionally breed mutts.
Hi welcome to TP.....If you would take the time and read the various posts, you will not see any "Mutt Bashing" here. You will see "designer breed" opposition and the reason why many are opposed to "designer dogs" and the various reasons why....Many of the members which post have mixed breeds. There are also various posts and comments directed at people to adopt dogs from pounds, etc.....
This subject is a tender one. Rockysmom, don't be surprised if post either starts a fight or makes members annoyed at you for bringing it up after there was just a heated debate about it a few posts ago.
How about start a post with pictures of your dog. We all love pictures and we'll get to know you a little better by knowing Rocky. =]
sorry. I notice people get angry in alot of posts. i did post one with pics of my dog. No one replied. ah oh well ill just stick to this site when i need advice. Its a pretty tight knit community, i guess. No need wasting my time trying to be accepted. lol, funny, i think this is why i like dog more than some people.
The best thing anyone can do about this subject is to simply not bring it up.
It really is a shame, but everyone has such deep personal opinions about it that sometimes they are so blinded by what they believe that they're not able to communicate their opinions without negativity and judgment, which ultimately results in the total deterioration of threads and accomplishes nothing but filling the board with anger and nasty posts.
So in short, just run away from this particular topic as if your hair were on fire.
You will find though, that most other subjects can usually be discussed without people freaking out and reaching for their midol.
Hi guys - I'm a little new to the site and by my SN you can tell that I am the owner of one of these "designer breeds" At first i too thought that this site may not be for me but after reading the posts, REALLY reading them I have learned so much about dogs and puppy mills and the effects on the dog population (or overpopulation) It is really a great learning experience and I'm sure that it will continue to be. I appreciate all of the advice that the members on this site offer.
I can't change how i got the pooch i DO have but i can make better decisions about where/how I will acquire my next pup.
Rockysmom - When I first started coming to TP I took offense to the whole "mutt" argument as well.. until I realized that no one had a problem with people owning mixed breeds. I've always stated that I'm very proud of my mutts... they're about as perfect as dogs can get in my opinion. What people have a problem with is people who are intentionally breeding mutts and calling them "designer dogs" or "hybrids" and people who are uneducated about breeding who want to give their dog the "experience" of mating or having a litter...
People get upset because there are too many dogs in shelters. There are too many dogs who have been abandoned. Many of these are mixed breeds who were really cute puppies but as they got older didn't have the same "cute" factor that they had as pups. The argument that I see most often is that if you want a mutt - go to a shelter or a rescue and get one. I can't disagree with that - as that's exactly where I got my dogs... and where I will always get my dogs. I have nothing against purebred dogs... but I love mutts and unfortunately - anytime that I want one - I have as many as I could possible want to pick from.
i was just wanted to discuss the animosty towards mutts on other sites..
i remember some of your original post. yes i do agree that the man who said all mutts are an abomination and should be destroyed is an ignoramus and i am embarassed to share the same air. someone who truly loves dogs would never say such a thing.
in my post i tried to get across that you wouldnt find any comments like that here, but you will find bashing comments about the breeding of mixed breeds. sorry if that was unclear.
Rockys - I have seen animosity towards mutts on some other boards as well and it is very frustrating. But like I said, I feel lucky because I've met some great people on here who love all dogs regardless of breed(s).
Unfortunately, we have a lot of people who come on who want to argue about the mutt issue and argue that "if you want a puggle... it should be ok to buy from a breeder who breeds puggles.." without truly understanding that few people have a problem with a beagle/pug mix... people don't have anything against the dog - but do have a problem with the breeder who is intentionally breeding more and more of the same kind of dog that there are already too many of in the shelters.
welcome to TP by the way... give it time - I think you'll like it here.
Historically, all purebred dogs have been selected from a mixed-breed or "mutt" population and cultivated through selective breeding. So breeding mutts gets you purebreds. I suppose some people must think there are just too many breeds.

mutt's are way better than purebreds...and they'll stay with you longer!!! mutts are less likely to get inherited diseases like purbreds...and they have a better temperament too....a mutt is a unique dog and no other mutt looks the same...so your lil mutt would be totally awesome..i mean..no offense to the purebreds... a mutt is way cheaper if you don't want to spend a lot of money...and getting a mtt..especially if it's off the street or from a shelter..shows your heart has total goodwill and that you are a good person...
sk8grl - You're not necessarily right... some mutts do live longer than some purebreds... but not necessarily. For one... many mutts come from owners who are uneducated pet owners and have allowed to unsuitable dogs to mate... and at times the puppies are not healthy at all.
I don't think that mutts are better than purebreds anymore than I think that purebreds are better than a mutt. And mutts are not always cheaper... I have seen "designer dogs" sold for thousands of dollars.
I do however agree with you that it feels good to adopt a dog from a shelter and to give them a second chance at life.
Rockysmommy1: I am a new member too so welcome from me to you dear!i'm not picky(no offense meant anywhere) if you love andare a responsible parent of dogs, cats horses, etc you're great in my book!!!!don't just come on for advice stay on and put blinders on about the debates its the great american pastime(heated debates!(grin) Heres what I do: If I do not agree with a certain subject I express it and politely agree to disagree, that way no one usually tries to change your mind and arguments are prevented and everyone is happy. My babycats do this as well(can you tell I "hate" animals yet(grin)(affectionate sarcasm)I have 8 cats and 1 dog(GS/Chow mix) I have had purebreds(I got at shelters as the only one of that breed which was what I wanted at the time(I have never gone to a breeder as GOD has always supplied me with the absolute best lovable "Mutts" and purebreds through rescue and strays(how I got my 4 original cats now! and my Chyryn-dog as well I don't care about the breed(thats a beside the point thing for me it is their personalities I look for. I have been blessed with the absolute best and most gorgeous animals(I currently have a beautiful Turkish Van cat called get this:Andy Griffith R.(last name)cos my hubby loves andy griffith! MY shorthared brown tabby looks like a bengal cat(but isn't(named Cherokee)she has"dots and dashes"(grin) as do her girls(the two we have left) then a medium haired tabby and white who is adorable and had two white kittens with grey smudges on their heads its precious! how about you all?
Just a significant add-on I will not bash breeders here but I will question their compassion when you can watch on animal planet and go to any shelter in the nation and find that 4.6(I think that number is current) million cats and dogs(purebred and "Mutts" of both species are euthanized each year(I know some shelter do not put purbreds to sleep but all it takes is one fussy irresponsible owner to put a beautiful purebred to sleep cos they don't fit the pattern of their living room or some such idiocy! I believe that for the good of the whole canine species and feline species breeders should vote to have a moratorium on breeding except one litter every 5 years or even longer as it takes10-17 years for a lifespan to generally end(give or take a few years either way) and give the others a chance to have a good home(It's not really the amount we have(though I agree we have too many... Its the fact of not having enough good caring and responsible homes who are committed to welcome a pet into their family as a full member of their household and even introduce them asbasically members of our family(I do this:This is my furchild Andy" or this is my furkid Cherokee) I am a real furgrandma as my two daughters have had kids. These are the kind of homes we need more of in the world not just the US! then if we bred responsibly with strict governance on how many and what kind(designer breeds? ridiculous) and no backyard breeders(even I am guily by accident of that-I usually strictly enforce this by immediately fixing my babies(missed out this time but no more) and volunteer at the clinics so that others are encouraged to do the same. I think this would help hugely....how do you all feel about this(pros and cons please)
