These people are doing it because there is money to be made. Celebrities and people who want dog fur or seal fur are willing to pay a lot of money for it. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez wears dog fur, as well as other furs. She may be advocating the fur trade and spreading this fashion to others. There are a lot of animal activists in China; that is, there voices are making a larger impact. Below is a link about what chinese animal rights activist are doing. Dog slaughtering is not only going on in China. People are realizing that there is money to be made. Moreover, countries like Korea, Russia, and other East European nations have a thriving cruel fur trade as well. Rott, actually a lot of people are acknowledging the fur trade. My school has over has over 60,000 students (larger than many small towns in the U.S.) who walk through hallways everyday with ads about the cruel dog fur trade in China, and the seal fur trade in Canada. I agree with LOR that the word needs to be spread, so that people will start banning these fur products, and start making a move. Supply and demand, if people no longer want it, it's likely that it will eventually stop. Lasty, I agree with pope that we shouldn't forget about the animal cruelty in the U.S. Most of us live in the U.S. and we have a higher chance of intervening and spreading the word.
Here are some links that talks about the dog & fur trade. I think the third link has some graphic images.
I am from Canada, and can tell you that weather they allow seal fur to be sold or not the seals will still die. Unless every one stops eating fish and other animals fished off the east coast the seals will continue to be killed. Weather for fur or trophies, as long as they pose a threat to the fishing industries it will happen.
As for people wearing dog and cat fur Dateline did this story about 6 years ago, they even bought jackets from chain stores and had them tested for cat and dog, some were found to be as well. So were many of those fur things that look like cats and dogs, sleeping cats ar very common. Alot of the dog and cat fur worn in north america are the coats trimmed in it because unless it makes up more that 10% of the coat it is listed often as "undisclosed fur" or along those lines.
That's my issue with it.... even if we can stop the dog and cat fur trade...theres still other animals, mink for example, that are being skinned alive too. Then they still use dogs and cats for food in China. And they don't keep them in humane conditions. So it's never really going to end for these animals....
And no, we are no better over here, but at least we don't skin dogs alive. But like dusty mentioned, we still use gas chambers...
I watched it. I didnt cry but I almost puked. I didnt see it all the screen kept stoping wile the dot moved.
I didnt know people wore cats and dogs. I knew those little fur things were usualy cats and dogs and I dont know anyone who buys them anymore. Ive taken everyone shoping they see one pick it up pet it Ill join in and say something along the lines off, I guess the reason it looks real is because it is real, Or Why doesnt my dog feel this soft? Because this one is fake.... No they use real dog and cat hair to make these.
I would never ware a fur coat or anything like that. After years of begging my grandma to get rid of all her furs I decited to lay off and just prepare to have a bunch of pillows (i decited trashing them or soemthing would be bad because then the animal died for no reason Making pillws out of them would be better) Well about a year after I stoped begging her to dump her furs she donated every single one and promised never to buy another. I dont know what happend she was always this fancy "its in style so I have to have it" kind of person. I was so happy but I still kinda wonder what made her do it.
i partially agree with riley, but i want to add that we are no better here in the US at all.
there are fur farms here that keep natually wild animals in tiny, enclosed wire-bottomed cages for all their lives until they are mature enough to get skinned. they go crazy and self mutilate themselves at often times, and also end up getting their legs trapped between wires and having them broken.
then at these fur farms the animals are killed in the most grotesque ways possible. when the animals are gassed, sometimes they remain alive and i wouldn't be surprised if they were skinned that way too.
there are also trappers in the united states that use steel leghold traps, and many times when animals get caught in these they remain alive with broken necks and legs, suffering for hours or days until they finally die, or the trapper comes along and clubs them out of their misery.
not only this, birds and household pets get caught in these traps too.
Not that it's any of your concern, Newfie_girl, but Pope and I had a recent discussion on a thread that she requested be removed (and it was) because a certain word to which I referred she deemed child-inappropriate. I was just asking her whether she wanted to comment on the child-inappropriateness of the content of the link provided in the original post.
However, I want to thank you for agreeing with my point, in that deleted post, which was: Internet supervision and parental guidance are imperative.
(Actually, I had looked for and couldn't find THIS thread earlier this morning...thought it had been deleted. Either somebody un/intentionally brought it back up or I'm blind!)

I agree, that animal cruelty will probably never end. However, I believe China will get things right. If you have every watched Chinese media and/or television, many Chinese have dogs as companions. I guess they are trying to publicize that dogs are companions for the individuals who do not treat dogs humanely. I've been to China a few times, and it is relatively difficult to find dog meat in many areas. I spend over a month in China two years ago, and the only places where I found dog on the menu where in provinces that eat them regularly. I'm sure most of you know that the vast majority of Chinese do not eat dogs. However, the numbers are still significant enough to cause a fluster. Unsurprisingly, whenever these topics are made, some one usually says they'll ban Chinese food. I do not believe there has been even one case of a Chinese American eating dog. Many of the Chinese immigrants aren't actually from China, but from Hong Kong or Taiwan. I think everyone should try out different culture's food. I wouldn't deprecate if dogs were killed and butchered for meat humanely. What is the difference between a dog and a pig? If we were raised eating dogs, I believe many Americans would be eating dogs. For example, Lewis & Clark preferred dog meat over any other meat once Native Americans introduced it to them. Early colonist ate dog meat. Where as today, Americans sees dogs as companions, and many top echelons in our society own them. It's a totally different mindset that causes these discrepancies. Instead Americans slaughter cows and pigs for meat. How do you think some Muslim and East Indian cultures feel, who believe that these animals are sacred? Do we really have the right or knowledge to tell others what to eat or what not to eat?

I didnt want to watch the video- i cant stomach that kind of stuff- i still have nightmares over a link that was posted months ago about these places that were gasing all these dogs and killing them and just piling them up on each other in this dumpster looking thing- i can still hear the barking and crying as they are put in this gas machine thing- that was horrible and the worst thing ive ever seen- so sorry i dont even want to see what is giong on in this video- sure does make you squeeze your dogs alittle harder today - I really dont know how ppl can be so heartless and ruthless - i would line these kinds of ppl up with serial killers- wish we all could do something to stop all of the worlds abuse twards animals- its very sad that really nothing is ever done- imho theresa
This should be a wake up call for all Americans and Canadians concerning Chinese products. We often don't think about the things we buy that are made in China. . .what they have in them, what they are made of. . . I have seen many products with fur on them from China that most certainly are cat fur.
They are thinking of profit and profit only!! What is worse is that they don't see anything wrong with what they are doing.
These people don't realize - animals have souls; they love, they feel emotions we humans feel. . .
I say, AN EYE FOR AN EYE!!! Let these murderers suffer as the poor animals do!!!
People need to realize also that many other Chinese products such as furniture, clothing, even food items have toxic chemicals in them which cause cancer and make us Americans sick!!!
I heard that the stuffed cats that you can find at gift shops that look like real cats curled up sleeping, are made with real cat fur from China. They also come as other animals, I've seen horses, dogs etc.
