Dog Dandruff?
Any Cure?

Why do dogs have dandruff? I notice little white flakes on my dog's hair (he's a yorkie so it's really noticable on black hair), and when I look at his skin it is really dry and very flaky! What can I do about it? Please help!

My vet told me to get a bottle of bath oil (alpha keri to be exact) to put 2 TBS in a quart of water and spritz it on my girls once a day.....and it works!

In the winter time they get "dandruff" from the dry heat in the house, and the vet said to add a little bit of fish oil to their diet so I have.

There can be LOTS of reasons for flaky skin and as a groomer I see it quite a bit....increasingly in the winter. I would ask your vet if your little one is physically ok, and if yes try the daily spritz....it cant hurt according to my vet.

One of our goldens had that problem, it cleared up once we realized the ear infections were allergies (thanks to the web) and switche dhis food.

I bathe him every 10 days...it's not a lot right?
I will give the bath oil a try!
Also, do i have to go to the vet to find out if its allergies?

What are you feeding? Some allergy items are common and many of us avoid like wheat and corn.

Every 10 days is more often than most of us bathe our pets. Once a month is more average unless your dog rolls in mud puddles every day.

You might also try Halo's Dream Coat. Milo had really bad skin with huge flakes coming off. After a week of the Dream Coat, which you mix in with their food, he had no more flakes and his skin is getting soft again.

Bathing every 10 days is not too much for a yorkie. I never go more than a week without bathing Lacy. Yorkies have hair similar to humans and it tends to get oily fast. I've never noticed a problem with dry skin with Lacy though. I use an oatmeal formula shampoo and conditioner...oatmeal is good for dry skin. Also, diet is important for the coat. I feed Lacy a raw diet. If your dog does have allergies, a vet would have to diagnose it. To find the exact cause of allergies required expensive testing...and sometimes after all that you still can't stop the allergies. My cat has had bad allergies all her life and no matter what I've done, it just gets worse every year.

I feed my dog Eagle Pack.. because it is better for his digestion. I think I will try treating it externally for now and if it really doesn't get better I"ll have to bring him to the vet : (

When you figure out how to cure it let me know lol. I have the same issue with Riley. Although he does have allergies.

feed your dog kibble and peanut butter mixed. peanut butter and peanut oil are a vet's cure for dandruff!!

Peanut oil lacks nutritional value...
A fish body oil, or olive oil have far more worth..

I just went out to buy some sure for chocho and the staff recommanded Nutricoat... its for mixing with the food, i guess similar to the Dream Coat product someone was talking about here. And the main ingredient are Soybean Oil and Cod Liver Oil and my dog seems to love the taste. I also bought the bath oil.....I will let you guys know how this will work out : )

-UPDATE-

I've been adding Nutricoat to my dog's food for the past month he is about 80% better! It is a skin and coat suppliment and I think i will stick to it!

I have a silky terrier, his name is Bruno and he is only 8 months old he is very clean but i have notice lately about a little dandruff and before it get's worst i was wondering about all the products you guys mention in here to make it better or disapear...but where do i get them? that is not online? can i purchase them over the counter like at petco? or do i have to go see his Vet?
