Whenever I give cooper a new rawhide he paces incessantly until i take him out. Then we walk to the backyard, he drops it on the ground, i pick it up, we go in, and he chews on it. Always the same routine and only with new rawhide. If i don't take him out, he will continue to pace and pace and pace. The longest i've held out is 20 minutes... It's like he's in a trance! Is he OCD? Or is he listening to some half instinct to take his new rawhide outside and bury it? It would make sense if he dug at the dirt or something, but he just drops it and looks at me. He's so nuts! anyone else with wierd rawhide rituals?
Nope, Cooper & Tucker just chew it aggressively and for hours on end if I let them. Maybe he just likes to have the smell of the dirt or grass on it before he chews it. I would take it outside myself, drop it on the ground and then give it to him just to see what he does.
Polly does almost the same thing. When she is done chewing it and wants to save it, she paces the house looking for hiding spots. Not outside, just inside. She has even hid them in the couch cushions. I think it is so cute.
Somewhere along that ritual, he likes something, perhaps it happened one time and you praised him or said something. Try a new ritual if you want to change it, does he respond strangely when you go to pick up the rawhide outside or does he wag his tail?
Not an expert here... but my guess would be that outside smells like him... and by taking it outside and dropping it in HIS yard - it makes it HIS. My dog does the same thing with his toys... we don't give him rawhide because he tries to swallow it whole... but all toys go outside, get dropped in the yard - then are fair game for chewing. It could also be that he figures - if you allow him to get as far as "outside" with it that it MUST be his...
