It was a tragic story from the beginning and for those that don't remember, I will try to recap it here.
Last year, I was contacted about possibly taking in a rescue Dalmatian that had a lot (and I mean a very, very, lot) of seperation / anxiety / social issues.
His original owner was a bed-ridden woman that kept Dexter locked in a small bathroom almost 24/7. He was let outside when her caretaker put him out on a chain attached to the house.
This dog only knew this kind of life, he didn't know freedom, he didn't know how to be a housedog or just be a dog, for that matter.
Well, the lady passed on and they were trying to re-home Dexter. I tried, but just couldn't do it, do to his extreme anxiety issues.
I live in the city limits and he would cry and howl and bark 24/7. He was just grieving his previous owner and could not handle the freedom of being able to run free in a fenced area, not being chained to a short leash. He could not handle being in the house, as his domain was a tiny bathroom, almost 24/7 everyday of his life.
Try as I might, I had to let him go back to the original caretaker. Doug came and got Dexter, he thanked me for trying, as did the original owners Mom. They knew that he had a lot going on in his mind and were greatful that I attempted to provide him with a normal life.
If I had lived out in the country, perhaps my neighbors would not be close enough to be bothered by the constant wailing of a dog in mourning, but as it is, I have a lot of close neighbors and his voice carried. Rather than risk losing my dogs, I chose to give him back.
Anyways, Doug went on the road this Spring, for his job and found another family, evidently in the country this time, to take care of Dexter. He too, tried to take Dexter on the road, but it just wasn't the life for him.
Dexter passed on earlier this year and tragically Doug was killed in a freak accident this summer. So now, I will take comfort in believing that Dexter and his original owner and caretaker are all together once more.
Here is Dexters dogster page, I've just updated it to mention that he has passed over the Rainbow Bridge.
Hi Hailey: Dexter was from Brampton, which is near Gladstone, up Highway M35. The gal that had him was a big animal lover, but unfortunately it was not the best situation for him to be in. He just couldn't handle her death and the rest is now history.
I am not sure how Dexter passed on, was told by Doug's brother in law that he had died just before Doug. Dexter was 8 years old, so I doubt it was old age.
Not sure how much to reveal about Doug's death, but it was in the papers and on the tv, so I guess there is no harm in telling.
He was working for a carnival company on one of the rides. They were tearing down the show and a piece of ride equipment failed. I won't go into the gruesome details, but thanks to God he died instantly. I went to the funeral, which was a sad affair, he was so young and his death was such a tragic accident.
I did follow up on the internet about the accident and in the local papers and learned that there are dozens of accidental deaths of carnival workers every year in the US. Doesn't sound like the kind of job that I'd be doing.
oh wow that really sucks i know this is a little rude maybe but have you seen final distination three? when all these kids die at a carnaval? did he pass like that? im sorry im asking all these questions im just very curious and things like this interest me ...
