I have a year old female Doberman who is constantly trying to get food off the counter! She knows she is not supposed to do it b/c she doesn't do it when I am in the room, only when no one is around. (Smarty!!!) Whenever I do catch her in the act and tell her "NO" or "BAD DOG" and she hops down and is sad. How do I permanently stop this bad habit????
I just leave it on for a while. It depends on the dog. I had one that figured it out the first time it touch it and others that take a week or two. Then if they have a memory lapse and start doing it again, put it back on for a while longer.
This is what the dog knows, The dog knoes not to do it when your around. the dog knows it's okay when your gone. Dogs are amorale, they do not understand the difference between being a good dog and a bad dog. I am sure that your dog shows you submission, and what you preceieve as guilt when you catch her. This is just a tactic to try avoid reprimand from you.
Getting food off the counter is a scavenging behavior (dogs are scavengers) Their whole lives are spent scavenging for food, some more then others. So this is a totally normal behavior, and to the dog is a perfectly acceptable way to get food, your the one thats not happy with the method. Shes found food on the counter, in the past, which will make her return to try her luck again, kind of like Bears that frequent garbage dumps and people playing the slot machine at a casino. She doesn't see the behavior as right or wrong (her mentality is closer to a 2 year old child) Its just a behavior to her. When you scold her, shes simply responding to your behavior which is basically a bully (she submitting to you to avoid being bullied) The reason she waits till shes alone now is, its simply safe to do it when your not there, so shes associating your behavior with counter surfiing, but she really doesn't know why your behaving the way you are. The best way to try to change the behavior is to (stop leaveing food out) or actually leave a booby trap set up with bait.(continually over a long period of time) Take a flat peice of cardboard, and lay it on the counter, with a little bit of it hanging past the edge. Scatter pop cans on the cardbioard with pennies or rocks in them.(Use alot of them so the noise of them falling is loud. If you have to bait the back of the trap. Make sure your not around. There cannot be an association to the booby trap and you. The tape may make the dog avoid the counter, so give that a try. The trap won't work for every dog, some are just not faized by the noise.
I have Dobes. Breed 'em show 'em etc..... sue I love your idea. Mine also counter surf and I'm going to try the booby trap. right now I just prop baby gates up at a slant so they cannot reach the counter. Dobes are too intelligent and not easily fooled. But if you load the cans with pennies or BB's it'll make that much more racket and maybe...just maybe stop the behavior.
I have dobies and they are know for things like this. I used the can trick......we call it the 10 commandments......clelan out a soda or beer can and let dry, put in 10 pennies and pull the tab back up with a paper clip. I then duct tape the top. I have placed a 3 or 4 foot piece of carboard or particle board on the counter and put 4 or 5 of these cans on the back of the carboard for the most part it does startle them.
I had one dog it never phased so I found theses mouse traps in the pet store, they have a large red flapper that attaches to the trap. It doesn't hurt a larger dog but sounds kind of like slapping a paddle. They also feel something trying to grab them
the trap works as well if the cans don't.
It is more of a behavior change you are trying to accomplish rather than correcting the dog for doing something wrong
