A stray lab mix puppy followed me home the other day and it started to rain so i left our patio door open for the puppy to use as a shelter until the weather cleared up and he could go home ( i live in a smsll town and dogs run loose all the time and they usually all get home okay[not good but happening]) but the pup wont go home and he has been here practicly living on my patio my entire family excluding parents has gotten attached but about an hour ago my dad said weget to keep him because we are puting a fence up this spring ...IM SO EXCITED!!!!!Well heres a pic JAKE..
Might want to put up a few signs....he may be someone else's puppy. He could be microchipped, maybe you could take him to the vet, and if he's not then you could get his shots and then assume ownership.
I know how attached one can get to animal's though so I don't say that in judgement, just caution.
otherwise you're going to have fuit loops calling saying it's their dog even if it isn't.
Maybe I'm wrong in my thinking here, but I just expect the dishonest people to swarm you. While it's important to be sure that his family isn't worried about him, you want to make sure that if someone steps up to claim him that they are really his family and not some jerks looking for a free Christmas present or a fighter dog or something.
If someone truly lost their puppy, then they're going to know what it looks like.
Please make sure you put a call into Animal Control, the shelters and your local vet offices too, to see if anyone has reported him missing. Your priority here, even if you're attached to him, should be making sure he is reunited with his family if he has one, and that could be resolved with just a mere phone call!!
Also, find out if there is anywhere near by that would be willing to scan for a microchip on him, he may be microchipped.
Just cover all of your bases, so in like 30 days or so with no responses, you can call him your own without a guilty conscience.
