We just adopted a stray puppy from the humane society- 10 week old terrier/shephard mix. They neutered him right before we brought him home. At first, he had a huge appitite, drank lots of water, and frolicked around like a puppy. He was fine for one whole night and day, then started getting lethargic, lost his appetite, and is sleeping all the time- not drinking enough water, not wagging his tail or playing. Could it be that he is just unhappy from the surgery, and was fine at first becuase the meds hadn't worn off? Is it normal for dogs to be in a funk for several days after, or is this sounding like something more serious? He also is having a running nose and blowing a lot of snot, which I haven't experienced beofre with a dog. Any ideas? With the holidays, most things are closed, and we can't really afford a trip to an ER vet. Thanks!
He's also not eating much- he is a saved stray, and is pretty underweight- he is the runt (the whole littler was there, and he was having to fight for the bowl of food, and not getting much) so he ate like a horse the first day, then not much today- a decent breakfast, but hasn't really shown a food interest since the lethargy and mucous started.
no it doesn't sound normal at all. sounds like he was harboring an illness and the stress of the surgery brought it out. i would have him checked out based on his lethargy , nasal discharge and that he is only 10 weeks old.
you say that he was a runt of the litter and he was always fighting for the food bowl. it sounds like that one of 3 things could be happening to the puppy. the puppy could be feeling lonley (sp?) because he isn't with his family anynore. it could also be because be ate too much and got himself sick (you talked about him eating like a horse the first night) and he could also be having an infection goin on in the puppies bodie due to the surgery. I don't know any other reasons why the puppy would be acting like this. I hope that this info helps you out some.
Hello Beechly: I'm a new memeber too! Your poor lil guy! and how blessed he is to have been given you as his mom! I ask the question? Why was he neutered at 10 weeks? that is a bit young(His reproductive system isn't quite developed and his growth could be affected as well as his maturity. My cats were in a bit of a funk(my dog girl too for that matter) due to the fact that the hormones have been taken out of the equation that type of surgery takes a big bit out of a little puppy that young. and he is a bit vulnerable to infection if he has any underlying illnesses(colds, fever, etc.) I would take your lil guy to the vet tomorrow and ask them to do an all over check(nose to tail) and make sure that he doesn't have any infections, check his surgery site, recommend some puppy vitamins to build up and protect his immune system. Our vet said keep our cats and dog quiet and check their surgery sites at least twice a day. I hope this helps
About the neutering age- the pound said that they can do it as early as 8 weeks, and he was ten- they won't let any animal go from the shelter without being fixed first, so we had to do it... I took him in to the vet, and he had a nasty case of ear mites and a pretty serious upper repiratory infection. He is on antibiotics and ear medicine, and I am giving him a puppy multivitamin to boost things a bit. This morning, he is already starting to chew on the christmas tree and pounce on the lower hanging bulbs- a good sign! He also is wagging his tail and paws at my socks when I walk around. I think he will be fine! Thanks everyone for the advice- I was really worried!
