and i read on the internet that i should pull it out gently with tweezers, which i did, and think i did successfully. the vet is closed so i have no idea what to do next. do any of you know? i'm really worried. will he be ok until tomorrow? it was on the back of his neck.
Just pull it out with a tweezer as best you can. You try to do it in one shot to get the head out. But if you don't its not a big deal because the dogs body will expell it on its own eventually.
I've read you should put the tick in a jar with alcohol to save it for testing. But I think that's only if you're worried about Lyme Disease. My puppy has been vaccinated for Lyme Disease. He had two a few months ago before he was old enough for Frontline. But he was fine.
I can't help you with pulling out the tick but I know how to prevent fleas and ticks from biting my dog. all you have to do it just give them a bath(if you can) and when your washing your dog use suave shampoo on them but don't use any conditioners. I herd that if you do that 2 times a month it keeps them away. I have been doing this for my little chihuahua for about 1 1/2 years and I havent had any problems with fleas or ticks ever since. I hope that this info helps someone with those problems. it's a very costly world out there for dogs and this is a very simple and easy way to prevent fleas from over coming your pet. if you don't know where to get suave shampoo at you can find it at the dollor store.
IMO you should never pull a tick out. If you douse it with a good tick/flea spray or just plain alcohol it will back out on it's own & fall off dead. Much safer & you know the head is out. Make sure you spray under the tick if it is engourged as there will be babies.
I think the Suave was just luck. My guess would be that being a chihuahua she spends very little time outside & you have few fleas in the area. While any shampoo will suffocate the fleas that are on the dog when bathed, I don't believe Suave offers any residual action.
