Hi Heather, I just read on another post about Murphey having had breathing problems. Wondering if you could go into more detail. I ask this because it seems like lately Sampson is having breathing problems. He's always snored but this is different, it's almost like he's gasping for breath. Last night he woke me in the night with the noises he was making. Each time he does this it's almost like he's hyperventillating...if I pick him up, pet him, basically calm him down it stops. But our bedroom is really hot this year so I'm thinking maybe he's too hot. He eats natural balance potato/duck food so he is on a high quality food. He checked out fine at the vet about 6 weeks ago and if absolutely fine most of the time.
He hasn't had the problem in about a year, so I'll try to be as detailed as possible from memory.
Alot of the time, he sounded like a little baby pig when he was breathing, just short and quiet little snorts here and there.
He snored when he was asleep a lot. But my main concern was that when he was sleeping, it was like he woke up every 4 to 5 minutes, had to move, then went back to sleep, and 4 or 5 minutes later, woke up, moved, then fell back asleep. (I really think this contributed to his behavior problems early on, as even now, he gets grumpy when he is tired. For example on Christmas, all my relatives were raving at how much Merphy's behavior had improved since last year, he got tons of attention, rather than people avoiding him for fear of getting bitten. But then, as the night went on and he got really tired, my grandma came up to pet him and he snapped at her.) Anyway, the fact that he couldn't get a good nights sleep really concerned me, even though people told me that it was normal for them to wake up like that. I figured I am a complete grouch when I don't get my sleep, I would think it would be the same way for a puppy.
He also did the reverse sneezing thing, which I just don't know any other way to describe it. At times he would start breathing so hard that I thought he might throw up. Some of it was allergies, so I had him on Benadryl back then. But now he's not on anything. He does pant a lot after we go for a walk, but I think that's because he's so overweight (we are working on that).
I don't know for sure if the change of food is what did it, but I just realized that since I changed his food, all those problems went away. It could just as likely be something else that I haven't noticed yet.
I hope everything is okay with Sampson, and let me know if you have any more questions or want more detail on anything.
Thanks Heather. I'll pay more attention tonight and see if I can describe what he's doing better. I just realized it's pretty much only when he's sleeping which is odd I think? Thanks for the help. If I think of any other questions I'll get back to you. :)
