My pup is 9 months and I'm just now going to take him to obedience classes, I thought I knew enough to train him myself....WRONG. Anyway, do you guys think that it's too late for him? are there some things that he just won't learn now? My only real hope is that I can teach him to walk on the leash; instead of pulling like he does.
I perseonally never think it's too late, a good obedience trainer will give you tips and tricks to help with the pulling and such like that. I mean a better trainer than your average Petsmart or Petco training class.
One trick I know is that when the dog begins to pull, immediately make a 90 or 180 degree right turnw ithout slowing, and keep walking. It forces the dog to turn and run to catch up wtih you. IF he lunges to the end again, make another turn. you may be making no progress in the walk initially but after a few times, most dogs get the idea that if they pull even slightly you are going to change direction and keep them from going where they want to go. They'll stay closer to you and pay more attention to where you are in relation to them.
Also... flexi-leads bad for pulling dogs. Flexi leads encourage pulling, and the dogs get used to the tension on the neck. Riddick won't even walk on a flexi-lead, he only walks on a loose lead now.
