Hi, I need advise about getting a pit bull. They are one of my favorite dogs and i have wanted one for a really long time. My fiance and i got a house out in the country and i want a dog that will protect my property. My question is are they good dogs to have with a family? I have read that they make good family dogs, but then there is so much bad media i am just wanting to be cautious. Please advise.
Pitbulls aren't really good protection dogs. They tend to like people to much. I know that sounds so odd when you hear the stupidity that goes on, but if they are trained correctly and safe for your family, they are not guard dogs. They are great watch dogs though. I've owned 2 of them. One raised as a pup, and another from 4 years old. The 4 year old was previously used as a fighting dog. He is a tremendous guard, but I wouldn't trust him with a young child or a stranger.
APBTs are medium large dogs with a lot of muscle and power. They look imposing, so they make a good burglar deterent, but aren't usually people aggressive. They need vigours athletic activity to keep fit and happy. Pits don't require a lot of coat care either. But, I must warn you, there are legal liabilities to owner one of these dogs. A lot of people are very wary about pit bulls, many places even ban them, and home owners insurance is hard to get. You will also have an increased chance of lawsuits on your hands. You have to be very careful when choosing a pit. There are many poorly bred dogs out there that are nasty and neurotic. You have to over socialize these dogs and practice obedience training from the start. You need to make sure your dog turns out right. Pit bulls are animal aggressive! They can also be very rowdy and jump up on people. If bored a pit will destroy. They are strong willed and have a mind of their own. They need a strong and confident owner who can take charge. They are big shedders too.
Don't believe the media, but don't jump right in without caution. They are a powerful breed, in that they are strong and full of willpower. But most are just big softies. I know of a lot of people with Pit Bull Terriers and pit type dogs who use State Farm insurance with no problems. I don't know if the insurance varies by area, but from what I hear, they are good to go with Pits. As was already said, Pits aren't protection dogs. They are specifically bred (created rather, bred now means you have to find a really good breeder) to be non-human agressive. Your best bet would be to go to a rescue for this new addition. Check the dogs out, and don't go straight to puppies. Get an adult that has been temperament tested to make sure there are no aggression problems. You'll be able to get to know it very well. Let us know how this goes, and good luck. They are a wonderful breed.
You must also be very careful about dogs with unstable temperaments. Sadly, pits are a dime a dozen nowadays. A good chunk of all dogs bred and by people who don't give a rats arse about temperament. These dogs simply can't function in our society. Trainers and behaviorists see pit bulls all the time with dangerous temperament. It's hard to find a good breeder. In fact, most breeders, the bad ones, will flat out boast about their dog's power and ability to withstand anything. This isn't a good sign. Just be careful when looking for a dog. It's easy to get a poor tempered specimen.
You must also consider that pit bulls are very animal aggressive. They are not at all good with other dogs. They have strong instincts to chase and kill cats, wildlife, and livestock. You have to be so careful in rearing a pit. If even one slight mistake is made this dog can injure or kill another animal. Fences must be high, sunk into concrete, and gates locked at all times.
Wow! Thank you for all who answered so fast. I don't want an aggressive dog, i was just wanting a kind of dog that would be good at scaring people off that shouldnt be there. But not one that would actually attack. I will definitely be adopting, if i was to buy a dog it would be Husky puppy. I live in Oklahoma if anybody knows of a good pitt bull rescue i would appreciate it. Also another thing somebody mentioned that they are not good with other animals. I have 5 cats and one other dog which is a Husky and Lab mix, would this perticular breed not be good with them? Also if anybody has any other suggestions on another breed i welcome all suggestions. Thanks once again!
