Hello, a girl called me yesterday saying she did not want her chihuahua anymore that when he gets in her lap it starts her asthma up but she really wanted him but just could not stand it.So I went a picked him up.He is 9 months old, house trained only had 1 set of shots, been wormed 2 times as she said.but he only weighs 2 and 1/2 pds he is so little u can see his ribs. She gave me some food in a zip lock bag that she said he eats but she also feeds it to her bulldogs.I think he is to little to be eating that she said he eats 2 bowls a day but still no wait gained.Do not know the name got to call her back today and asked my hubby picked him up.Should I take him to the vet cause he is so litle and get him checked.Does anyones dog have different color toenails some of his are black and some are white.
I would take him to the vet just to be sure. I feed my chi's solid gold just a wee bit. They are little bite size pieces especially for small breeds. Hopefully he is fine and just needs a breed appropriate food. Best of luck and post a picture so we can see him.
Definately get him to the vet to get checked out. It sounds like he needs to get more weight on, needs to get caught up with his shots, and make sure there's not some other reason (besides the food) that he's so tiny. My chi is not big, but you can't see her ribs. About the toenails, my greyhound has both black and white nails, no biggie. I'm glad you were able to get the pup, it sounds like he needs some good care. Post a pic when you can.
yes he is 9 months and only 1 set of shots.but he only weighs 2 and 1/2 pds he is so little.she said she wormed him 2 times but people can tell u anything u know.there is so many types of food to get it is just trying to get the right one for him.my firned has a small chihuahua and her vet got her to feed science diet.is this any good he is so little should he be on a diet thanks for any help
Take him to the vet and see if there's a problem that not allowing him to gain weight. Get him on a good food. You vet will probably suggest science diet, because they sell it, but it's a really bad food. Check out http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ to help you pick a quality kibble. Also find out what vaccines he was given in his first shot. You will probably need to get rabies if he didn't because it's required by law. Other than that he shouldn't need anymore shots for the rest of his life. Lots of vets give to many shots and cause vaccinosis. More info on that here http://www.critterchat.net/vaccs.htm http://www.petresource.com/Articles%20of%20Interest/rabies_shots.htm http://www.pawsitivevet.com/articles.htm#aggression If they push you to give shots you can do a titer test first to make sure they are needed. Vaccinosis is a little know about, but very serious problem that I have personally seen kill and cause irreversible problems in many dogs. There are some vets changing their opinions on vaccines as more studies show they last for life, but some still push unneeded shots to make more money off the shots, then they get even more when you come back for the problems it caused.
If he's only had 1 vaccination shot (and we have no idea when that vaccination was given, if it was given at 6 weeks age its virtually useless), I really doubt he's had enough to boost his immune system enough. I personally think he should have at least 1 more DHPP shot/booster in addition to the rabies shot.
Regarding food, tell her to find a good quality kibble and stick with it. Science diet is an Okay food, there's worse (ol'roy) and better foods. If he'll eat it, right now it'll probably be good enough for him until your friend a decent food. I suggest you tell your friend to check out Innova, Solid Gold. Canidae, Wellness, or Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's soul.
