I am going to try to sum this up and make it as short as possible. We found out last week my 5 year old Boxer has cancer. He had surgery on Thursday to have his Mast Cell Tumors removed. It has been a very stressful time for him since then. No matter what medication we give him, he is still in pain. He has wined literally 24 hours a day since Thursday. Right now he has a Fentanyl patch on and is still crying. I guess the part that worries us the most is he will not eat or drink. When he first came home we knew he was hurting and wanted to give him a special treat so we cooked him rice and cream of chicken soup. The next day we gave him Cream of Chicken Soup over plain pasta. Well needless to say, it made his tummy upset. He didnt have diarhea, just soft stools and HORRIBLE gas. We cant put him through the upset tummy again with all the staples in him but he is standing by the pantry crying. It kills me to see my baby starving but it will kill us worse to see him in pain from bad gas and painful diarrhea. We have offered his dog to food him many times and he turns his nose up. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Well, the first thing I would do is contact your vet, and get advice from them.
They know your dog, they know his condition, the procedure they performed, and they should also know about where he should be right now in the healing process...so they would be the first place I would call. They should have an emergency number too, where they can be reached on the weekends.
Have you had him retested for the cancer? Im sorry to have to say this but when a dog doesnt eat its usually serious.Specially for a boxer,,,,they love their food! lol I would take him to the vet and get him checked out.....
Maybe I should have been more clear. He will eat anything other than dog food. We have spoiled him rotten. A friend of mine who has a boxer that went through the same thing suggested tuna and rice. She said the Cream of Chicken was high in fat and would give them gas. Just made him some and he scarfed it down. However, any other suggestions would be wonderful. She suggested protein because it was high in protein. It was suggested by her vet.
OK! lol Now I understand more. haha I think he just has your wrapped around his paw.unfortunately.Just leave the dog food out and give him nothing else...no treats just dog food.He will get hungry and eat.
You may want to try just plain chicken cut up and mixed with white rice. We have always found that no matter how sick the dogs might be they enjoy this very plain meal.
Also if he isn't drinking water that's not good. You could water down the rice some so it is a bit more like soup. Do NOT add any salt or other flavors. Dogs do not care if their food is salted and added sodium wouldn't be a good idea at this point.
What we usually do is take the rice/chicken out of the fridge and add hot water to it. That warms up the food without having to heat it up. Be sure to check it before giving it to him.
You can also add some carrots or green beans. Chop them or shred them and cook along with the rice.
What about some canned dog food? Even if your dog doesn't like dry food he may like the canned.
Thanks so much for everyones concern! Actually he is doing much better today. He has began drinking water and eating his dog food on his own. Everyone please say a prayer for us that it will be a Grade 1 tumor and they got all of it. I dont know how I could make it through anything else nor could I put him through this again. Boxers are the most wonderful companions and the most human like dogs but they have a terrible downfall.....they dont live that long. I never knew I could love anything so much in my life.
