Ok, so ya'll may or may not have read about my little guy Harley and his eating and potty issues but have you ever heard of Kennel Mange. When we got him, he scratched and scratched and did the "flea bite" thing he also had dried skin on the inside tips of his ears. It took a couple of baths to get the kennel smell off of him and I hoped this would help w/the itching. I took him to the vet who did a scrape and said it was a skin irration often reffered to as Kennel mange. Pointed out to me the way his hair was standing up on his spine (looked like a rhodesion ridgeback). After weekly trips to the vet and a shot each time he is better but I wondered if this was common.
My vet told me there were 3 types-1) was contagious to humans 2) was just mange that we have always heard of and the 3rd one was common to animals who come from breeder kennels. He knew the breeder that my guy came from and didnt seem too alarmed but I wondered if it were common w/other kennels. The shots were 1 a week for 4 weeks and I can NEVER remember the name (dumb pet owner here) but I think it started w/an "I". He's better, the scratching is not NEARLY as bad and hes very thoughtful to "flea bite" all of us (we dont let him) and the dry skin in his ears is gone. Once again, I'm a new owner so please be patient w/my questions.
Was it Ivermectim? If so that would be demodex. It's cause from a mite that occurs naturally on all dogs, but only causes problems in some. Usually when they are born with an impaired immune system, high stress, and when the immune system is over loaded with too many vaccinations. Sarcoptic is highly contagious to other dogs and can infect people and other animals. It can only reproduce on dogs though so it's not a really big problem if others species get it.
