I'm new here - My best friend Rusty was a Labrador - Rhodesian Ridge back mix. (purchased at a local shelter)- Awesome dog he was a handful for the first year-
When he passed on I purchased a female yellow and a male Rhodesian Ridge back both had papers. When they got to together .... she gave birth to 8 short furred like a velvet. The color was a reddish black. 4 the ridge 4 did not . (More like a Mohawk about a inch high) shines like silk
I kept one his name is Duke .. if you ever find one I have some tips for you. Heads Up - Not a beginners dog, I have been around dogs all my life -
Duke weighs 120lbs (HUGE) all muscle I run him 2-3 miles a day on my bike.
This is a one person dog and extremely loyal. Treats strangers with a watchful cool eye always Great with children he knows Only gets aggressive as a last resort and after repeated warnings. They no there job and love doing it They have a need to run and play they can be real clowns Very intelligent and loves to please - learns quick - can very stubborn -CALM LEADERSHIP IS A MUST NEVER EVER EVER hit one a play rough trust me on this one. You have to have their respect and attention at all times or U will have a hand full. Rusty ripped the seat out of my Bronco and I do mean out Be in calm control at all times - use hand signals with verbal commands - Confirm commands - like sit (dog sits) than say good sit. Show them respect, feed them, clean them, shelter them, protect them and love them. The more you talk to them the smarter they get. They will let you no what they need if you tune in to them.
My daughter has 2 female Ridgebacks. One w/the ridge, one w/o. They also have 1 HUGE Shepherd. The lady they bought the girls from told her they were 3 mos, later she told her they were 5 mos...they are gorgeous dogs. My daughter and her husband (and baby) live way way out in the woods so all 3 dogs are for protection. One Ridgeback will go "out" and meet whatever is of concern, the other circles the house, if anything/one gets close to the house they are met by the Shepherd. Needless to say they dont get their power meter read correctly too often. The girls are great, a little aloof but the GS is a big baby, would be a lap boy if he could.
Hello I'm Staci and I also have a ridgeback mix. She is a boxer ridgeback mix. Her name is Nellie and I got her about 2 years ago, she is 4 and yes she is definatly exactly what the other opinion was. She is a very friendly dog but she is a one person dog whicjh happens to be me and we have 3 other dogs but no matter where i am she is there she goes everywhere i go and sleeps at my feet. If I pack a bag and go towards the door she bites at my feet the whole way. She is the best dog I have ever had. And when we are out if someone gets too close to the vehicle she growls, and if the other dogs try to eat out of her bowl she growls but never does anything unless she has just had too much of them bothering her but she doesnt attack she nips but i dont blame her.My boxer/pit aggrivates her constantly. And she loves children and my 3 year old niece lived with us for a year and at first i was nervous about her getting close to Nellies bowl but after awhile I noticed how gentle she was with Hailey and ends up she wont growl at any kid even digging food out of her bowl. Ridgebacks are one of the most loyal, protective, smartest dogs I know of. I have had alot of dogs, but she is far by my favorite and always will. There is alot on the net about them and they have some really great books on them. I hadnt even heard of them until I adopted her in Washington State from a man who couldnt care for her anymore but i dont think she was ever taking care of properlyby him and had to fight another dog to eat, so she doesnt like men much but would protect me and our kids with her life. Congrats on having one.
