A few of you know I went away this weekend to IN and MI well when we got back last night and we went to pick up our dogs and the lady said our beagle about 4 1/2 yrs old had a seizure, she said they had just come in from outside and she was walking by and he stopped his jaw locked and he started to shake, she said he did this for about 30 seconds and said it was a seizure, she said that her dog has the same disorder so she knows what to look for.
To my knowledge my dog has never had a seizure, I've never witnessed one before in a dog. Can someone confirm if this sounds like a seizure.
I have seen him when he sleeps or is relaxing he will twitch a bit but it looks more like a muscle spasm then a seizure, I've seen seizures in humans but not in a dog and not sure if they are similiar.
Hard to say unless you were there but I do know through a few beagles that we have had in the boarding kennel and a breeder friend that siezure disorders are common in the breed.
You will need to consult your vet, but from personal experience you are probably going to have to wait until it happens again........or not. This may just be an isolated incedent or the indicator of a trend, adult onset frequently occurs around 3 y/o.
He is between 3-4 when we adopted him about 2 1/2 years ago they said he was 1-2 and the vet agreed, so now we have had him for 2 1/2 years so best guess he is now 3-4.
The vet did say it could have been the stress of being boarded at a new facility. But unless he has at least 2 witnessed seizures a month they do not recommend putting him on the meds cause that is a life time medication. He said it sounded like a petit mal seizure which aren't as bad as Grand mal, if it were grand mal then he would suggest the meds now.
So we just have to keep an eye on him. It's a good thing I work from home 4 days a week.
I'm so sorry, I hope that doesn't happen to Reed my beagle. He is my baby.
He doesn't trust anyone but me, my husband and my daughter. He is the biggest grump in the world and I love him for that. I've been watching him all day and so far nothing. He doesn't seem any different so i don't think there is any damage luckily.
we have a daschund/beagle and he started to have sezuries at 2yrs and is now 9 yrs and has had them ever since, we've had him on medicine (a pill twice a day) for them....when my dog has them he is not able to walk cause his muscles get real tight, starts drewling (sp) and it last about a min or two it was real scary when he first started doing this cause i didn't know what was wrong...
I would get some blood work done to be sure. Seizures can be really different in different dogs. Some have convulsions, some just freeze up, and others fly bite. They can usually be controlled with daily medication. One of my danes had seizures. Eventually he had to be put down and we found out he had a brain tumor that was most likely causing them.
