question for you.. this heart worm medicine. They have only taken the pill once? Now im nervous.. The vets are supposed to give this to the pups once a month right? The pups just went for their final shots and they didnt say anything about it? Should i call them and request it again.. and do i do it once a month?
You give the heartworm pills once a month, unless you got hte proheart6 shot, which I really strongly recommend against getting. If your pup hasn't had the heartworm pills in a month and you just went for the vet checkup, call up the veta dn ask if they gave it (and you somehow missed it). If they didn't, ask if you can drop by and pick up a 3 or 6 month supply of the pills. You can give them yourself. If your dog is on interceptor or heartguard, the pills are flavored chewable tablets that are more like treats than medicine.
I've heard so many people on the show circuits I attend talk about their dogs having serious reactions to the proheart shot. The people on my akita forum who've had the shots given to their dogs have also had bad reactions as well. I guess it's just too much medication for the dogs at once. I'm fine with giving a pill once a month.
Here's a link to a bunch of news reports on bad reactions to proheart 6 http://www.dogsadversereactions.com/moxidectin/moxidectinpage.html If you do a google search for Moxidectin adverse reaction (the active ingredient in proheart) you'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about. Even though testing from the makers of Proheart shows that about 1% of dogs have reactions to the shot, that's far more than have reactions to other heartworm meds like interceptor and sentinel.
