I had my dog spayed in Tuesday, brought her home wed. Her incisions were slightly swollen and pink/red. She is a boxer and VERY HARD to keep completelt still. Now her incision seems more swollen and red today, and it looks kind of wet. Clear wet, not yellow like infection. I have caught her licking it a few times. Can this be a sign of infection starting or just from her not staying as still as I would love for her to be?
There usually is a little bit of leakage but you should try to keep her from licking - which is almost impossible I understand. They have plastic collars you should be able to borrow from your vet that will keep her from being able to get to it. They are a huge pain in the rear for you and the dog but whatever works. If you have any doubts ever about anything a phone call to your vet can never hurt anything. If they absolutely won't give you any answers without seeing the pup then it's better to be safe than sorry. You can also call around to other vets and get more than one opinion but of course your own vet is going to know your situation the best. If you have any Neosporin + pain relief cream not the ointment, you can use that a few times a day to help fight infection and relieve some of the discomfort. It's not a bad idea to have some of that on hand anyway in case of any minor cuts for you or your pup. The ointment will not the allow the wound to dry and therefore isn't recommended - at least that is what my vet told me.
