Hi Everyone!!! I am a fairly new breeder and I have asked my vet about ivemec (I hope I spelled it correctly) He encouraged the use and gave me some guidlines. I breed Boxers and wanted to know has anyone had any adverse reactions or any information concerning the proper dosage?
It's 1/10 cc for every 10lbs. Some of our clients at work use it with no problems. It's pretty much the same ingredients as heartguard. Personally I don't give any of my dogs chemicals until they need it.
what do you do to prevent heartworms? I stopped Iverheart just 3 monthes over the winter in 2005 and 1 of my females had a faint pos heartworm result. She's ok now but my vet told me never stop the preventative. He suggested the 1% ivemec to save on the costly heartworm pills since I have 5 dogs.
Heartguard or Ivomec doesn't prevent heartworms; it kills them in their early stages. So really you give it every month to kill what may be there. I test twice a year. (So far in 13 years none have been positive) I test in the middle of heartworm season and right after it gets cold. If one of them did test positive they would still be in early enough stage for the Ivomec to kill them.
I also don't use any flea or tick meds unless they get fleas. I check them for ticks whenever they come in when it's tick season and have never had a problem.
