As most of you who have been around here for any length of time know, the moderators, myself including, tend to be very indulgent when it comes to Off Topic posts, despite the fact that they are specifically against the rules. We recognize that each of us have lives outside our pets, and I think at times, we all want to share that part of our lives with others on the forum. If this forum had an 'off topic' area, it wouldn't be an issue. But it doesn't have that area, and thus we just do the best we can and try to satisfy everyone.
However, recently there have been numerous posts that that not only are off topic, they are personal attacks, often very vindictive in nature that have no place on this forum. I don't care who they are directed at, how justified the original poster thinks they are in making these posts, or the story and/or reasoning behind these posts, I am sick of them, as are all the rest of the moderators. And when you (and you know who you are) come on the forum and post them repeatedly, despite moderators coming through and deleting them as we see them, that's definitely going way way over the line. If I see this behavior one more time, I'm banning the culprit, permanently, and I won't care how long you've been a member of this forum. I'm sick of it. And sick of the pathetic reasons, and excuses.
Is it going to have to come down to the Moderators deleting every single off topic post we see, in the name of fairness, so no one cries 'favoritism'? I personally dont want to see it go that far, and I sure hope it doesn't.
I have asked this before, but what are the chances of being able to split the forum into multiple topics, Even if we only had three or four topic areas (lets say general dogs, breeds, breeding, and off topic posts) I would LOVE to see that happen.
WS, that decision is completely in the hands of ADMIN. If it were up to us, it'd have been done a long time ago. We can only hope that the forum eventually changes to a format that allows a specific area for OT posts.
Minn- What is required to change the format? More in focus... what is preventing them from doing so? Time? Money? This is the only dog forum I have come across who has all the general posts on one page like this, and it an be VERY hectic :)
WS I actually have no idea. The Moderators have nothing at all to do with the actual running of Terrific Pets. We help moderate the forums and nothing else. We have recommended the change to a different format (PHB board format, for example). Hopefully it will happen one day.
WB It's not just for off topic stuff, can you imagine how nice it would be to have our dog topics split up just a little bit... some really good posts get buried in a matter of a day or two b/c this is a VERY active forum.
I can see your point W_S but I was a mod for a on line forum a few years ago and there is just no way to police what topic is here or there and people will be staying why don't you post it in the other one.
yada yada, It is impossible to please every one this is why there are rules and you have to stick to them.
Maybe with all the mods would help to police all the splits. There where only two of us trying to do it and we just shut it down because people wouldn't follow the rules.
Am I wrong to think that a big purpose of this forum is to drive up 'hits' so that it can be closer to the top of the search engines? Isn't that to boost advertising-- thus making more money for the 'site'?
There are a lot of better things that could be done to improve this forum. Many things have been mentioned, yet nothing is done.....
How about Avatars? Spell check for Pete sake? How about IM's???? A good portion of what is said on here (mean and nasty comments for one) could be handled in private.
How about a good way to share pictures?
I know this isn't the first, second or even third time I have mentioned those things.
You know what? If Admin needs I know of a few really good computer people that could hook him up :)
As far as the OT topics..... I think of them as any of the other topics I don't click on. If they interest me I look and if they don't I don't. It is easy to just skip over stuff. I would hate to see any one permanetly banned for it. JMO.
Ahh...... so basically defying mods? Is it because some of these people are younger (or don't have any sense)? I know you guys are busy, and it is appreciated, but I hope the culprits in question, get a warning or so....
I do wish that the forum would be upgraded a bit. No offense. I mean.... when was the last upgrade? Ever?
i hope when the format is changed, none of the existing threads are lost. i have no idea what is involved in sometihng like this but it will be a welcomed change to have different sections for certain topics.
if we do have a private messaging function in the new format ..... will members use it ? especially to flame another poster, if they feel the need to, instead of doing it on the board ?
