To those who have experience with maltese doggies, can you please tell me if they're "BARKERS?" I'm about to get one soon, but my husband said he'll get rid of it if it barks too much! Meanwhile, the maltese or the maltipoo are my favorite of the small hypoallergenic doggies that i adore. Please give me some advice!!! Thank you
If you are worried about your husband getting rid of a dog because it barks too much, do not. I repeat.. do not get a dog.
They all bark. And they tear your house up and they pee on the floor and they eat everything, including the plants in the yard. They dig holes. They whine ALL the time They usually pi** off the neighbors They ruin the upholstery in your car They hide bones underneath things so that you step on them and twist your ankle ANd they always embarass you in public.
Expecting anything less is just not sensible.
And, becaues my mother has a maltese, all I can tell you is that hers barks it's head off. At everything. It sits in the living room and barks at noises, and smells, and when you come into the room it barks to say hello.
i agree with everyone else. How much is too much barking? all dogs are going to bark and it doesn't seem that your husband wants a dog as much as you do. Please hold off until both of you are on the same page. Dogs/puppies are a lot of work and require a lot of patience.
i have a maltese-bichon frise mix pup and shes 5 months old and she barks at her own shadow- its pretty annoying and really trying to break her of this. she will bark and bark and wont be quite for anything- she just looks out the door and ( we have a full glass front door) and at night she will stand up and look out the door and will bark her head off. ive tried turning the porch light off thinking she coudnt see but she still barks. i turn the light on and she still barks. i dont know about all maltese but mine surly barks and wont shut up..lol
I have two maltese mixes. One Maltese x Poodle and one Maltese x Yorkie. Yep..they both bark. Not excessively though. I did buy two citronella bark collars for them since our fenced in yard is in the front of the house and we live very close to downtown. Lots of people walking their dogs past the house. Those collars worked wonders!
As everyone has said, all dogs bark. Your hubby doesn't seem to keen and besides that I don't think you have the ideal situation for a dog, any dog. Leaving a dog in your front garden where everyone walks by will turn any dog into a barking menace. Consider a cat but stay away from siamese as they can be very vocal and I don't think hubby will appreciate that.
My maltese never barks..however he went though some kind of phase a while back when he'd bark at my basset molly, but he got over that. He's extremely hyper though. Other than that he rarely barks. It does not mean yours wont. You can't really ask people if a certain breed will bark or not, if it's in their nature they will. All dogs are different.
I also agree with everyone else, please take the advice. If your hubby can't handle a dogs temperament to bark every now and then, you shouldn't get one. Consider something soundless..like a snake or rabbit.
